1990 Peugeot 205 XS 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nippy little GTI lookalike

Faults:

Clutch went at 90'000 (costs of nearly £200 to replace)

Central locking was very temperamental.

Sun roof leaked.

Electrical problems involving the stereo and dash board.

Manifold didn't fit down-pipe, led to a constant blowing that was never fixed.

General Comments:

This car was seriously good fun despite all its faults, once lowered and on a set of 15" alloys this car looks seriously good as is a almost gti replica.

The biggest criticism of this car was the extremely expensive insurance (its only a 1.4 not a gti) and how much Peugeot want to charge you for parts, much better off going to a motor factors for everything.

205 XS's are very very cheap to insure for what they are. I am 19 and I pay £578 in my own name. The best places to try are Direct Line, and the other good one is elephant.co.uk.

1990 Peugeot 205 GTi Classique Sport 1.9 from Sweden

Summary:

Fun buy, but be aware that it requires constant attention

Faults:

An air hose on top of the engine "flew" off and I got oil all over the engine room. After it was re-fitted I put 2 liters of oil in the engine to restore proper levels.

Small (but many) electrical problems in the interior.

Car-door pockets about to fall off on both sides.

Oil leakage (probably from oil filter box)

Water leakage (source unknown)

General Comments:

I bought this car about 3-4 months ago and have had the problems listed above. Altough they are quite a few they are all minor errors. The car is quite old (1990) and I am the 10th (!) owner of it and that's not something you want especially when it's a GTi.

I choosed to buy mine anyway since it had nice interior (except some minor electricity problems) and the engine was running fine without black clouds comming out of it.

There are some rust on it even though I've seen many ~89 models looking just perfect. Why mine has begun to rust I don't know. The rust is mostly in and around screw holes in the engine room and front spoiler. So be sure to check that out (check front-frontspoiler screws).

In general the car is a fun experience to drive. Although very noisy (90KM/h+) and does not handle well in rain (even with brand new tires).

I love it when it works, but I really hate it when it don't since the French engineers made some extremely (!) strange solutions of some things.

1990 Peugeot 205 1.9 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

High insurance, but very fast

Faults:

Since I have had the car the only thing I have had to replace is the windscreen at 64000 miles. It came with a full service history.

General Comments:

This car is very fast off the mark.

There are a lot of modifications that have been made to this car since I have had it and there are a lot of extras to add on.

The insurance is high.

1990 Peugeot 205 GL 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cracking first/second car!

Faults:

Parts can be quite expensive.

The tracking can be easily knocked out causing premature, uneven tire wear.

The sunroof leaks a bit.

The engine leaks a bit of oil.

General Comments:

Despite many attempts to shift the back end round corners it sticks to the road like glue!

Despite only having an 1100cc engine the 1.1GL feels very nippy.

Considering there is no power steering, the steering is stupidly light for a front wheel drive vehicle.

I would say that the 205 1.1GL is a great learner/first car - cheap insurance, 400+ miles to a tank of fuel.

1990 Peugeot 205 XS 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A vaule for many first hot hatch

Faults:

When I first got this car the brushes in the starter motor had to be replaced.

At a 100,000 miles I had to have a new clutch as it broke when I was driving along.

At a 120,000 miles I had to have a new drive-shaft, I believe this is a common problem on the 205.

General Comments:

This car was excellent value for money it only cost me £900 and was worth every penny.

The handling was brilliant never lost grip once.

Fuel economy was average depending on how it was driven, this was mainly due to it's low gearing.

Performance was mind blowing. I put a K and N on mine and it would easily keep up with the 1.6 Gti.

And not forgetting to mention cheaper tax.
