1996 Peugeot 306 XR 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Costly deal, needs improvement

Faults:

Since acquiring this car:

The plug wires went bad.

Back shock absorbers went dead.

Power steering adjuster broke off.

Hand brake seems almost impossible to adjust to hold the car in position especially on a hill.

Unable to keep to keep the bolt that holds the ball joint in place.

The bottom engine mount is damaged and it is almost impossible to change.

The pedals are too close together, this was not designed with a male driver in mind.

The Peugeot 306 engineers need to make the car easier to repair and more compatibility is required.

This car is often difficult to start and is extremely sluggish when cold.

General Comments:

The external shape of the car is good, there is a lot of room on the inside for a small car and the interior looks good.

1996 Peugeot 306 S16 2.0 16V petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Designed with love, built without care

Faults:

Trouble starting - dealer blamed the battery, had to swap twice.

Speed sensor gave up after 30,000 miles.

Buzzing front speaker.

General Comments:

Sensory overload. Beautifully balanced, fantastic feedback from the suspension and steering.

Gear-change not great - haven't driven but assume it's improved in the GTI-6. Really screams above 5000 revs.

1996 Peugeot 306 XLDT 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nippy

Faults:

Rattles in the drivers door.

Indicator sounder clicks intermittently for no reason.

Rev counter works intermittently.

Doors are generally squeaky.

When setting off normally in 1st gear sometimes the car accelerates away far too quickly (scary).

The starter solenoid has stuck once and the car refused to start, probably a sign of things to come.

General Comments:

Fairly reliable, 50mpg at 2500 rpm motorway driving (tedious).

Too small for a six footer, seats are not really comfortable for journeys over 1 hour.

1996 Peugeot 306 XLDT 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Economic motoring - with reservations

Faults:

Radiator had to be replaced - at my expense, not under warranty.

Air bag light keeps coming on since I had the car - had it fixed under warranty three times. I now live with it.

Driver's window electric motor packed in and had to be replaced - not under warranty.

Front discs had to be replaced - got it done in France - cheaper!

UK dealer servicing prices are a ripoff - far cheaper in France.

General Comments:

Great car let down by lousy after sales service by dealers/Peugeot.

Extremely poor space in the back i.e. head and leg-room.

1996 Peugeot 306 XLTD 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Airbag warning light has reported a problem and has been fixed 3 times at great expense.

Accelerator cable has jammed on (scary).

Radiator had to be replaced at four years old!

General Comments:

Nice handling.

Good fuel economy (~44mpg mixed town/motorway driving).

Very poor build quality. How many times am I going to have to pay for the airbag electrics to be fixed?

Can't wait to go and buy a Toyota.

1996 Peugeot 306 XLDT 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Needed attention to cooling system - one of the hoses was loosing water - fixed. Radiator is on its way out but should be OK for a few '000 miles yet. Water in fuel filter keeps coming on erratically - but the car is due a service so that should fix it. The doors creak and click when opened. The gearbox gets quite moody, some days it just don't want to cooperate.

General Comments:

Diesel Fanny Magnet. Faults above aside, the car is a beautiful drive, crisp, fuss free handling, precise steering and loads if power when the turbo gets warmed up. Lovely pick up on the motorways, bit of a heavy car around the doors, but when it goes it certainly flies, accelerates from 80-100 at the same rate it does from 30-50. 45mpg supercar - well not quite.

1996 Peugeot 306 D-Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Radio - 6 weeks to fix.

Radiator corroded through within 2 years.

Driver's seat fabric badly worn.

Headlight reflectors corroded.

Shock absorbers replaced at 50,000 miles.

General Comments:

A driver's car, handles very well through the twisty lanes. Impressive on motorways. Encourages spirited driving which pulls the mpg down to 38, but will do 50 mpg with some restraint.

Build quality feels a little flimsy, but great styling.
