1996 Peugeot 306 XS-S 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Underrated hatchback, brilliant to drive, great to look at

Faults:

I had to change the clutch 4 days after I got the car, but that was expected so I was not too disappointed.

There's a small hole in the driver seat shich I believe to be very common on the sports interior cars.

General Comments:

The car drives fantastically, the handling is really very good without compromising the ride which is decent too.

The engine is still very good even after 100k, and revs happily.

The gearbox is very good, and the ratios are set up well to the engine, making the car very easy to drive.

I got the car with full Peugeot service history, which seems to have been a real bonus, because I cannot find any fault big or small with the car since I have got it, I would recommend looking for this when buying a 306.

From the reviews I had read of the car, I was expecting to have a challenge with the cars reliability, but it really is not as bad as people make out.

Even though my particular model does not have the BAS brakes, the car is very good under braking, and feels very safe from locking up.

The insurance costs especially for me as a first time driver are really very good in comparison with a lot of other cars, which was an attraction to me.

Also the second hand prices of these cars is very cheap, and for what you get with them, I think they are a very good buy for anyone from boy racers to small families.

1996 Peugeot 306 XSi 8V 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

GTI-6 isn't fast. the 8v is a good car

Faults:

Within 25 miles of picking the car up, the oil pump packed up and the car needed a rebuild at a cost of £700 (great).

Since then, the car has been hammered (can't help it) and it has never once given up! ultra reliable, a companion!

Radiator got shot at by an air rifle (found pellet in rad) so that needed replacing.

General Comments:

Handling is superb, don't think the car was lowered, had standard 15" XSI alloys and it out handles almost anything. 8v motor torquey and reliable, seats comfy, looks good, not over the top. GTI-6 performance is a myth, yeah, its quick, but the gearing lets it down, I was glued to one in a 420GSI rover estate on the straight. the XSI isn't hyped up like the GTI, so its allowed to be a little sloweR!

1996 Peugeot 306 DTS 1.9 DTurbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent performance for the running cost, but poor reliability

Faults:

Injector pipes 4 times.

Both bottom ball joints worn to excess by previous owner. Resulted in hubs being worn and needed replacing.

Engine generally in poor condition, but that's due to previous owner (s). Oil came out like creosote when did and oil change.

General Comments:

Good car, but poor reliability (not all down to Peugeot).

Not had any electrical faults (yet - touch wood)

The car handles very well, the back end has been lowered and the car has Toyo T1-S Proxes tyres on... very good!

Seats are OK, but could be better, more padding and lumbar support needed.

1996 Peugeot 306 XLDT 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap and fun to drive

Faults:

I have had to replace a drive shaft as the intermediate bearing failed. I did this myself and the drive shaft cost £70. Other than that it has needed normal service items only (Battery/Tires)

General Comments:

I am amazed how much I like my 306. It was purchased as a cheap car to run. It has lived up to this as I have had little cost and by trying (hard!) I can approach fuel consumption of 60mpg. With the 60 liter tank that gives a big range.

On top of that it's a bit of a cracker to drive. It likes cornering and is still comfortable on long runs.

The XL only has an electric sunroof, no other extras which means there is less to go wrong.
