2001 Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol from Sri Lanka

Summary:

Stay Away!!

Faults:

After owning a 206, which had only its AL4 gearbox problems, I went in for a manual 307, thinking that it would be easier to maintain, and also for the fact that is is much bigger. This has been the most horrible vehicle I have ever owned.

Trouble started after the 1st week I got it. The car wouldn't start sometimes and the starter motor was replaced for 250$.

The bottom of the windscreen beading is leaking water into the engine compartment, including the battery. Could not find a fix for that.

Then it said antipollution fault and TPS sensor; oxygen sensor replaced for 150$. The problem seemed to have gone.

Again after a week or two, the power steering pump went. Since it was an electro-hydraulic unit, I had to spend about 500$ to replace it.

Radiator cooling fan stopped working afterwards, and cost another 200$.

Then when I finally got the car running fine for two weeks, the damn thing caught fire one night and screwed the left side of the engine. Seems to have originated from the alternator. 1500$, and was lucky to get away with that amount.

General Comments:

Stay away from this model. The comfort and interior quality seem to be good, but reliability is just a joke.

2001 Peugeot 307 Style 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

French cars older than 2003 are a no go

Faults:

Clutch had to be changed almost at every year, as well as brake pads and discs.

At 50k, had to change catalytic converter kit, which cost me £800 (anti pollution fault).

CV joints and wheel bearings needed changing quite often.

At approx 90k, the gear box went, a bad grinding noise when in gear.

At the same time, the drive shaft went, causing car to shake and wobble when driving above 50mph.

Needed new a exhaust, and new cooling fan motor.

General Comments:

As you can see, within the short space of time I have had the car, I could have bought a new car with all the money I spent on the repairs.

The car does run economically; a full tank can do me approx 400 miles on both motorway and high street.

Was easy to manage, and drove very well.

Comfortable seats.

2001 Peugeot 307 HDI 2.0 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Peugeot ownership? Never again

Faults:

Horn rarely works.

Anti pollution system fault light comes on intermittently and results in a sudden loss of power.

Indicators change direction without prompting.

Acceleration sluggish.

General Comments:

Advised my Peugeot dealer of the anti-pollution warning and he charged me £50.00 to check the car, only to advise that a repair would cost approx £3500.00 for a full replacement of the fuel system. Something about a breakdown of the high pressure fuel pump resulting in metal fragments contaminating the whole system.

I drove the car away as quickly as it would allow. Since the weather has improved and become a little warmer, the fault has vanished. I've lost all confidence in the car and I'm looking to part-exchange as soon as possible.
