1987 Peugeot 309 GL 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Retro when it left the factory! Great car

Faults:

Speedo cable broken.

Rear wiper not working.

Clock not working.

Glove box won't stay shut and stays broken.

General Comments:

Superb steering and handling.

Simca engine design dates back to early 60s. OHV so no cambelt changes.

1.3 with just 65 BHP, but very nippy.

Good gear change with well defined 5th gear gate (no risk of 3rd by accident).

Rides nicely. Steering informs you of every bump, but still comfy over bad surfaces.

35+ mpg.

Nice simple dashboard layout.

Loads of passenger and luggage space.

Under geared - not so good on the motorway, but great fun on A/B roads.

Noisy - especially beyond 50 mph. Drums badly on some road surfaces.

Drives like something out of the 60s/70s - you decide if that's good or bad!

I bought the same car new in 1987, and I still rate it as one of the best and easiest to live with cars I have ever owned. Sold it after 8 great years.

1987 Peugeot 309 GTI 1.9 from France

Summary:

A true amazing GTI..

Faults:

Bad quality of some components like turn signal commands and other "small stuffs". Broke the signal turn signal command and the glove-box mechanism without even forcing on it.

General Comments:

Over-steering behaviour: fun to play with but requesting some driving skills.

Minimalistic comfort: thus less weight.

Sticks to the road while not lacking comfort: amazing OM suspensions/great chassis design.

Hard to fit two guys in the front with vests on for example: when shifting you may often hit your passenger's elbow.

The power-steering pumps too much, but then it wasn't meant to be use for city but sport use,

1987 Peugeot 309 SR 1.3 carb. from Slovenia

Summary:

Cheap and compact

Faults:

- The car was already in pretty bad shape when I got it, but it didn't stop me because it was for free and I needed a car.

- The interior has literally been falling apart, especially the lower plastic parts under the steering wheel and the radio.

- The car is still shaking when I try to hold it at speed, but when I accelerate it's OK. I still don't know what's wrong with it.

- The water spraying apparatus hasn't work for quite some time already.

- The hydraulics on the trunk door don't work. I have to hold them up if I want to keep them open.

General Comments:

The car is 20 years old, and despite all the problems I have with it, I'm still satisfied. It has a great acceleration for a 1.3 and also pretty nice top speed (175 km/h).

Its consumption moves from 30 to 50 miles/gallon or 6-8 l/km. If you want to buy this car, buy it from someone who has taken VERY good care of it, or else you will be left with problems.

1987 Peugeot 309 GRD 1.9 diesel from Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summary:

The real little giant

Faults:

The suspension was bad when I first got the car, so I was happy to get it for free, as it was my first car.

The water pump was replaced after 10 000 km, and in general the wheels were a problem.

General Comments:

As this was my first car, I was happy to get it for free. It has gone 30 000 km in a single year on the tour with my band, and it also went over tough mountain roads without a problem, or maybe was it just me because I wasn't spearing it of any harm.

It didn't use much fuel, and in the end when I calculated the general fuel usage it was 4,8 liters / 100 km.

It had to go away only because of one reason, because the costs of the service became too high. In general, that is the problem with Peugeot. I own an Opel Astra 1.7 TD and the costs are incomparable.

The car looks small from the outside, but inside it has more space than most cars in it's class. Only after I didn't have the car anymore, I realized what a price it was.

The exterior may seem ugly for some people, but in some way I liked it. Maybe I got too attached to the car.
