1993 Peugeot 405 Mi 16 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Awesome performance a real wolf in sheep's clothing!

Faults:

The crank snapped at 130000 Miles, rather expensive, but completeley self inflicted. (150 mph Racing a Porsche)

After rebuild there was a ticking noise, Soon rectified with new cylinder head more expense!!

Rear brake calipers did not work when I bought the car. I reconditioned them at no cost.

General Comments:

This car is amazing, as quick as an Audi TT, but faster much to the disgust of the driver!

It also handles beautifully.

The car used to tow a race car all over the country. This never seemed to be a problem you wouldn't know there was a trailer on until about 95 mph.

1993 Peugeot 405 GL 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A superb family estate car cheap and bulletproof

Faults:

Suspension drop links failed at 112000 miles I replaced myself.

H T lead failed at 117000 also replaced spark plug at the same time.

Seats have worn in the stitching on both front seats.

Gearbox sometime crunches into second gear.

General Comments:

The car drives very well and is spacey and comfortable.

The only really bad thing I can say about the car is that on a raining day the windows mist up something terrible.

Also it is a bit underpowered being only a 1.6.

1993 Peugeot 405 GLX 1.8 petrol from Norway

Summary:

Undervalued. A future classic.

Faults:

Turn signal relay replaced.

One heater control dashboard light burnt out; a lot of time to replace.

Engine oil disappearing; not sure why, suspect a leak somewhere. Don't see any blue smoke in the exhaust.

Radiator hose leak.

Heated seats don't get warm.

Replaced battery in key, remote central locking worked for a couple of days, now doesn't work anymore (though central locking works via key in driver's door).

Tiny rust spots on top of back doors; sanded off and retouched.

General Comments:

I bought this car as a cheap runabout just for getting to work; but I often leave my other, newer, car in the garage because the 405 is such a pleasure to drive.

I bought it 10 years old from the proverbial "one careful owner from new" and it is in very good shape, inside and out.

Great styling. Doesn't look dated even though it was first produced in the '80s.

Nice driving position and ergonomics. A bit basic, but doesn't feel cheap.

Very comfy, also in the back. The kids like to take this car, even though our other car is a minivan.

Good-sized luggage area.

Oddly enough, when I owned a 1995 405 I found bubbling rust in the top of the rear door frames which I found unusual.

Two years later my dad bought a 1993 405 as a cheap second car- same rust in the same place, must be something to do with the manufacturing process not sufficiently rust-proofing this area. And your dead right about the comfort level compared to more modern cars, the 405 shames most of them and even it's own replacement the 406, if I'm going on a long journey I know what I'd rather take!

1993 Peugeot 405 T16 2.0 turbo from Germany

Summary:

Superb performance camouflaged in functional family pack

Faults:

Nothing major, a flat battery and an oil leak, that's about it.

General Comments:

Absolutely amazing car.

Very, very quick, but doesn't look it! Very much understating car.

Handling is brilliant. Especially with the 4x4 it seems really calm especially in the wet. No never seem to feel the speed.

Dash is nice in design and functionality.

I love the engine. It can be super smooth in the lower revs and has the performance when you want it. Nothing seems to be an effort for that engine.

Thanks to its turbo lack - which can be nice - and a fairly heavy clutch it can be uncomfortable in town driving, but open road I never drove anything better.
