1998 Peugeot 406 LX 2.2 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A roomy comfortable smooth and safe ride

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong with the car.

The radio stalk on the steering column was defective, which was replaced by the dealer.

The door trim on the drivers side was damaged, again this was replaced by the dealer.

Unable to get any history on the car from the dealer. (Imported from Northern Ireland).

General Comments:

Drivers seat does lack lumbar support despite the adjustment feature built into the seat.

The car is less responsive in first gear, but is very responsive at the higher end of the gear range.

Very smooth ride

Very good handling for a car of it's size

Massive load space on the estate

Diesel engine has not given any bother at all.

This comment is regarding the fact the original review said the car was "unresponsive" in first gear. Potential buyers don't be put off as this is called "electronic boost reduction", fitted to a lot of post 1992ish turbo diesel vehicles, that limits the engines power in first gear so it is not so easy to spin the wheels. Anyone who has driven a slightly older turbo diesel (my old 205 for one) knows what I mean.

1998 Peugeot 406 Deluxe 2.0 from Malaysia

Summary:

Above average family saloon

Faults:

Replaced fan motor and belt. That's about it.

General Comments:

This car is not as comfortable as I had initially thought. Long distance driving can be tiring. Suspension not as good as Citroen, but better than most Japanese family saloon. Tire change to Dunlop Sport recently much better. So quiet and better handling. Replaced tires were Goodyear.

1998 Peugeot 406 SVX 2.0 16v from Brazil

Summary:

A French ride car. Very comfortable

Faults:

The windscreen cracked by itself, nothing hit it! And Peugeot didn't want to change it on the warranty.

But the rest of car is going well so far.

General Comments:

I agree, it's a very good car, despite of all the efforts of the smart (dumb) gearbox to ruin the 2.0 16v engine performance, that isn't that brilliant.

One thing that I don't understand is that smart gearbox, it is so clumsy, if you put it in the sports mode and push the gas pedal to the end, it changes the gear at 5500rpm!? Why if the limit is 6200rpm? But hey! I'm don't want a 406 to be a mile runner!

But overall, the car is quite good, very comfortable, reasonably safe and well built (the ones that are made in France, avoid those that come from Argentina because it's made by one of the FIAT factories and so it is poorly built).

1998 Peugeot 406 Executive 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An absolutely excellent car. Comfortable, reliable and good looking

Faults:

Door open indication never worked.

Handbrake weak - still weak.

General Comments:

Company car maintained by company fleet garage. Apart from the minor problems mentioned above, no work other than the two services (20,000 miles), tyres and front brake pads.

Seriously considering purchasing it from my company at three years.

1998 Peugeot 406 2.0 from Malaysia

Summary:

Little things going wrong can irritate

Faults:

Engine fan burnt after 56000km. Replaced, now the fan does not cut off, both fans run continuously and the wind noise makes it sounds like a jet plane about to make a take off.

Recently the power window up/down automatic up function has gone berserk. You can get all wet after paying a toll on the highway during a tropical storm as the window decides to wind down by itself.

Clock lights on the dash have gone out.

Driver's side inside door lock not functioning.

Under bonnet insulator dropped off at 60,000km.

Water tank leaked at 50,000km.

General Comments:

If it was not a company car, I would have gone broke keeping up with the occasional repair bills.

The engine can be temperamental at times.
