1966 Plymouth Fury Sport 318 cid from North America

One of the finest cars I ever had!

General Comments:

The 1966 Plymouth’s were a refined version of 1965 in every way. Top quality; the torsion bar suspension offered firm road holding, the Torqueflite transmission with 2 oil pumps (front and back) gave a firm and not mushy shift. The 318 cid engine was a very spontaneous performer.

The interior and exterior styling was crisp and very tasteful, especially the bucket seats.

If this car was still available today, I would buy it again!

I remember mine well and the speeding tickets when I was a teen. None were boring crap. Maybe he picked up a Belvedere 383-440 Road Runner next. Or the 426 Hemi 425 HP. These are a pretty decent entry car in the 8-30k range depending on how it’s equipped. This car in the review should find a decent driver for 10k. The 318 was one of the best engines ever. A 383 4 speed would be better. It’s memorable with any drivetrain. A great era.

Absolutely. Didn’t read that fact here first. There is no substitution for cubic inches. Make mine a ultimate 426 Hemi 4 Speed. Also look up values.

I had a 1972 Fury myself. It was my Uncle's. Not sure how it compares to a 1966 model, but the one I had was ENORMOUS. The car was so wide that it actually felt uncomfortable and claustrophobic driving it down our two lane road. At 5 ft 8" I could easily sleep in the back seats fully spread out. The thing also just drank gas like a drunken sailor. I remember the power steering was really weird too. As in it was too light. There was hardly any feedback in the steering wheel and it was like the steering wheel on an arcade game.

That said, the car was VERY fast. But ultimately it suffered badly from some nasty rust issues that caused rain water to pour into the driver's side compartment. I sold it and have missed it ever since.

Summary:

The best car around

Faults:

I had to completely rebuild the transmission, and had to get a new engine. Heater core went bad quick.

The original 318ci block that was in it was cracked; had to grab a 360 Magnum (was weird to rig up, but has plenty of power).

Body has some cancer, but the frame is straight.

Sat in a field for an unknown amount of years, so all these fixes are not unheard of.

General Comments:

So fun to drive. Only one in my area. Only problem is finding interior parts, but that's not an essential part of its functionality. It's a great car though. Love it more than I love most people.

1967 Plymouth Fury VIP 383 from North America

Summary:

Well very reliable, fast but cheap to fix, never breaks down, has charm and personality

Faults:

Minor stuff carb starter, distributor, tires, sat for 20 years. New ground leads and major cleaning. The interior was black from mold, now red, the original color. No rust at all.

General Comments:

This car goes like stink. The 383 has tons of power, the car handles very well and floats down the highway at 100 miles per hour no problem.

My Fury has been very reliable, even with a bad original starter, carb and alternator, the car still started every time, even when I thought she wouldn't; click, click, click, then fired right up every time. And the rumble the car has sounds amazing; such a sleeper.

All in all, an amazing car, 1500 well spent.
