1999 Plymouth Neon Highline Sedan 2.0L SOHC from North America

Summary:

Small, Dependable, Comfortable.

Faults:

A coolant leak developed shortly after taking the car home.

Replaced the water pump at about 145k.

This really helped the problem, but there was another gasket that needed replaced, near the radiator hose.

Watch these things, with that coolant leak, overheating was inevitable. I'd always have to carry a gallon of that stuff with me.

General Comments:

This wasn't a very powerful car by any means, but it was very dependable, roomy and an easy car to own.

As a graduation gift, this car made going from point A to point B effortless and comfortable.

I never had this car in the garage, my father and I could always do the maintenance on our own. Even without the Haynes manual. Very easy work.

Great first car.

If someone tries to tell you these aren't good cars, they are very much wrong.

1999 Plymouth Neon Expresso 2.0 from North America

Summary:

The best car ever, will buy another

Faults:

Sun roof slipped off tracks at about 162,000km.

General Comments:

This car has been great to me. Still everything original, minus the usual maintenance (Brakes etc). I've done all the work on my car by myself, only thing I noticed is my fuel mileage isn't as great. But I intend to make it a 5spd and further it; I usually get about 30MPG, but my friends 5spd gets about 39MPG.

After I did the timing, I noticed it gained in performance.

The only thing wrong is the sun roof, and it leaks a bit of oil now at 220,000km.

The dealership here is complete crap.

I am looking to buy a 2005 SX2.0 as my next car.

Hey, I saw you were very happy with you Neon Expresso. I just bought one, 1999 make, has 60K miles, so about 98000km on. It runs smoothly in the city, but when I took it to the highway and approached 60+ mph the steering wheel started to shake. Have you had this problem?

4th Feb 2008, 00:06

Howdy, just checked and actually seen a comment. No, I my steering does not shake after 60mph. I drive to work daily (about 170km both ways) I usually pull around 85-90mph on average. Its nothing, but a smooth ride, I've noticed a shake once I go over 95mph, might even be 100mph. But I guess it just depends on the previous owner of the car. Like I said my car has been nothing, but solid for me, plan to replace some seals this spring since some oil is leaking into the spark plugs. Nothing major tho.

1999 Plymouth Neon Expresso 2.0 liter from North America

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Sunroof is off track, and will not open all the way.

At the time I bought it, the check engine light was on, only a bad sensor, no charge.

Has a LITTLE bit of a hard time starting, but always goes first or second time.

Brakes squeak, but have no problem.

General Comments:

Great reliable car.

1999 Plymouth Neon from North America

Summary:

A great little car for a first timer

Faults:

The thing that was going bad was the brakes. It squeaks whenever you first get into it. It's worst when it's raining. We had it checked, but they said the brakes isn't out nor was it going bad.

General Comments:

I like it a lot. I've heard rumors about how bad it functions.. but it's just all bull. You really got to own one before you start talking smack. It was my first car and it runs beautifully. It's comfortable and I really recommend it for those that are looking for their first car. It's great for students. It got me to school and back safely.

I helped a handicapped friend of mine buy a new 2001 Neon in 2001, and as he is unable to do anything to the car himself I have stayed in touch with him and made sure the car was doing OK. In 60,000 miles it has required absolutely ZERO repairs and has been an extremely good little car for him. I'm glad you're enjoying yours. They are really great cars.
