1996 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Pretty dependable little car

Faults:

The exhaust pipe has fallen out of the motor on my 96 Grand Am SE, 2.4L, I can't see any clamps etc there, any suggestions as to how it re-attach it to the motor?

General Comments:

All in all, I have spent very little money on this car. The only other thing I have done was a complete brake job on the front.

Faults:

I have a problem where the car will start up then stall right awsy. I am not sure what to try. Does anyone have any suggestions. The funny thing is that I had this problem before then after a few weeks of it not starting it started right up before it went to the mechanic.

My Grand Am is the best car I have ever owned. It is fast, economical, smooth and doesn't look like every other bland and boring car on the market. I'm furious that Pontiac dropped it and replaced it with the ugly, slower G-6. My family has owned lots of cars, including 3 imports, and the Grand Am is the best of the bunch by a long shot. I traded a loaded 5.0 Mustang for my current Grand Am and I honestly didn't lose all that much in performance. If this one ever wears out (doubtful, my friend put 346,000 miles on his) I'm going to try to find another good used one.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Junk

Faults:

3 alternators.

Power Windows (driver side once, passenger side three times)

2 Water pumps.

1 Heater Core (that was a fun one)

AC compressor.

1 Radiator (stupid plastic part on driver side of radiator)

Ignition coil housing (which lead to a flex pipe on the exhaust system to break because the motor missed so bad it broke it)

Ignition Module.

Cloth covers on door panels fell off of all doors.

Weird noise in front end when I turn the wheels to the right and accelerate.

Water on floor board driver side after rain.

Water on rear passenger side floorboard.

Rubber door protectors fell off.

Radio controls don't work all of the time.

Glove box handle broke.

Rear view mirror fell off.

Almost all warning lights stay on. Including the check oil (which is fine) the ABS (which is fine) the check engine light around half the time and now the Air bag light... woohoo.

General Comments:

Junk STAY AWAY.

I noticed almost everyone mentiones water on the drivers side floor board. Where is it coming from?? Has anyone been able to figure out how to stop the leak?? it's driving me crazy.

As far as everything else...I've got 200,000 miles on my GT.. all those problems are real and more are coming mostly dealing with constant ignition/electrical problems.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.1 from North America

Summary:

Don't get one

Faults:

Immediately after warranty went out, had to replace the transmission (40,000 miles).

Six months later, had to have the head/valves re-done.

Have replaced two water pumps.

Brakes have been done too many times to remember.

Have went through three sets of CV joints.

This spring we replaced the struts, the rotors, the brake pads, another set of CV joints.

Car runs like crap. Neither dealer, nor private mechanic has been able to tell me what the problem is. Wouldn't have another one if they gave it to me - Id sell it and buy me something else!

General Comments:

Car handled well when "new".

Engine was quiet and powerful.

Liked the general style and looks of this car.

Just wish it hadn't had so many problems.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am SE V6 from North America

Summary:

Great car, nice looking, get what you pay for

Faults:

When I bought this car:

Needed alternator.

Needed radiator.

Never had a working a/c in spite of recharge.

Power locks pushed down into door and not working.

Engine light on.

Ever since:

Whistles when you accelerate.

Hesitates on hills.

Engine light still on in spite of being looked at.

240000 km (150000 miles) :

Dead. First gear of transmission gone (drove it in third gear), but alternator died today and is no longer worth fixing.

General Comments:

Overall?

Got what I paid for. Quite happy.

When you're dealing with a high mileage, 'disposable', cheaply made car you expect small problems. Thankfully, all I got was small problems.

I bought her for $950 and put far less than $1000 into it overall in the two years I've owned it.

My other disposable car, my Ford Taurus, is a dead '99 with lower mileage than this car and it sucked repair money in the -thousands- every year. Lost a tire when the front suspension snapped, was a recall, but we were never told about it before or after by the dealer until we asked around. We STILL paid for the tires. Bad news. The Grand Am is a gem by comparison.
