1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 3.4 (3.4) from North America

Summary:

Very reliable! Some minor issues.....

Faults:

My Lower Intake Manifold Gasket started leaking at 59,000 miles. But, overall I'm happy with my GM. GM's are a lot easier to work on than ANY other make/car.

General Comments:

Just two things have gone wrong at this point. A bad Alternator, and my lower intake gasket. However, I discovered that the lower intake bolts were not tight? Dealers in my area wanted anywhere from $450.00 to $760.00 dollars to perform this job. The gasket only cost $50.00, I'm sure you know where the rest goes to LABOR! I have 17 years + in general automotive experience. So I did it myself. It took me about 9 + hours. Dealers estimated a 5-6 hour job. Although, you really NEED to have ALL THE TOOLS to complete this type of task. I'm willing to lend my knowledge FREE OF CHARGE if your attempting to do it yourself. You can contact me at grortega@go.com or gortega@go.com.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE2 3.4L V6 from North America

Summary:

Decent car with some problems

Faults:

The brakes make a very loud grinding noise and sometimes the car misfires. I fixed the misfire problem by cleaning the injectors and since then I have had no problem with it, but I expect this problem to come back. I have noticed that the brake problem is very common. While driving to school I heard the same exact noise coming from another Grand Am next to me.

Replaced one injector at 97000.

Seats are very uncomfortable and make squeaky noises. Whenever I brake the seats lean forward and make cracking, squeaking noises which extremely annoy me. I will spray that with WD-40 soon, but I don't think the problem will go away.

I started to hear a weird squeaky noise coming from the front right tire recently and it has proven to be extremely annoying, I'm going to get that checked out soon.

Struts went out at around 50 thousand miles.

Suspension squeaks whenever more that 2 people sit in the back.

Coolant started leaking at around 60,000.

General Comments:

I like my Grand Am for it's looks and decent performance. The car is quick of the line and very fast on the highway, but the reliability of the car is sub-par.

The handling is not that great, but the looks make up for it.

I have noticed that my Grand Am is a lot smoother while using premium gasoline, and using the valvoline fuel system cleaner I got rid of the knock which so many Grand AMs suffer from.

If the reliability of the Grand Ams was like Honda's, I would really love it.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L from North America

Summary:

Never buy a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am

Faults:

I have had this car for one week now, and it died on me. The altenator went and I had to get a jump and barely made it home. It ran nice when I bought it, but there has been trouble since then. I put a bigger battery in it to help since I had a high power stereo to hook up, but now trouble. I suggest eveyone to email Pontiac and tell them your problems with them and maybe they will do something about it (I highly doubt it though). Never buy a Pontiac you will regret it.

General Comments:

The car is nice, its red and a two door, but there is some problems. the seat lever in the back broke on both sides. The temp control broke, this car is junk.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 V6 from North America

Summary:

A pain in my butt

Faults:

I bought the car used April of 2003. It was a GM Certified vehicle. The first thing that I noticed was wrong with the car that the trunk leaked on the right-hand side and to this day it still does. The second thing that happened was the ignition coils went. I have replaced 2 as of now. Then a couple of weeks went by and I had to replace spark plug wires and clean the fuel injectors due to the car running rough. This car only likes the premium gas in it I have been told. Now my latest is that my key less entry doesn't work properly. It will unlock, but not lock the car. I also have been told that I have a leak in my intake manifold. I love the design of the car, but it has been a money pit to me now. I have just under 60,000 miles on it and I wait to see what will go wrong next. I am scared to drive it long distances for I have been stuck twice because it has broken down. My husband is on his second Grand Prix and no problems. My best friend had a Grand Am and started having problems at 30,000 miles and now has traded it in for a Grand Prix. I believe I will go back to buying a Honda. I would not recommend this car to anybody at this time.

General Comments:

The design is great. I love the red with my tan leather interior.

I was told by the dealer that the car should only be run on regular gas not premium.
