1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 Liter Multi-Port F.I. from North America

Summary:

Runs very good when taken care of, and has good parts

Faults:

Seats have started to wear.

Sun bleaching is setting in.

Roof tapestry is held by push pins.

Spark plugs & wires.

Alternator.

Slight malfunction with catalytic converter (was clogged, but it cleaned itself out when I ran "Heet" through it).

General Comments:

Nice car. Glad I finally got it running after a month. All I need now is new spark plug wires (I already changed out the plugs) and possibly a new alternator.

1989 Pontiac Grand Prix LE 2.8L from North America

Summary:

The best american car I've ever owned

Faults:

Water pump @ 185000 miles.

Fuel pump @ 195000 but the filter was really clogged!

Transmission @ 175000 miles, but it still had life left in it, I just didn't want to take chances.

General Comments:

I am 34 years old and this is my favorite car I have ever had. When you drive it you feel very stable and comfortable. Though my Civic is more agile on the road, it seems to "squirrly", and with the wrong bump you could lose control.

I have driven this car from one end of this country to the other several times, and to the Mts in WV many other times. The only things that have broken were a water pump, a fuel pump, and I did replace the transmission at 175000 because I think it was not taken care of and was on the way out.

I bought this car for $800 seven years ago and it is still going. Though it is hard to work on (I'm a mechanic) the engine is extremely reliable and I intend on keeping it for a long time.

Need instructions on replacing the waterpump on a 1989 Pontiac Granx Prix 2.8.

1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 2.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

I wish I could buy a modern equivalent

Faults:

When the car was relatively new, had to replace the computer.

Ignition module has also been replaced.

Manufacturing problem with the gearbox, manual, due to steel parts that had not been hardened.

Most recurring problem is with the rear brakes which seize up, transferring all the braking load to the front wheels, this can be noticed by the high build up of brake dust on the front wheels.

General Comments:

Overall, has been a very good car, and I'm at a loss to know what newer car to buy to replace it. Most modern cars all look alike. The Grand Prix has a look of its own.

Good handling, and good looking, great driving car and some of the best seats in a car.

The GM V6 engine is such a long lasting unit, my previous Citation had the same engine and covered a very high mileage. The other family car at that time was a 1986 Omega, with the same 2.8 V6 engine, this also covered a very high mileage. Both of these cars had very little maintenance costs.

1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1L V6 from North America

Summary:

Daily driver

Faults:

Electrical work was needed when bought.

Tie-rod broke.

Car steering wheel off center.

Lots of static in the radio.

Cloth on the door is water damaged and dry-rotted.

Fuel door is busted. Have to prop up fuel door lever to open.

Coolant light goes on and off.

General Comments:

Car runs great for its age.

Underbody is badly rusted, but the upper appearance is good looking. It's not an attractive car any more. Maybe back then it was, but not now, it's just a daily driver and good gas economy, so in the long run I'd drive till it dies.
