1994 Pontiac Sunbird LE 4 Cylinder from North America

Summary:

It's an awesome ride!

Faults:

A/C belt needed removed.

Both the front and back brakes needed replaced, still haven't got the front done.

The whole exhaust system needs replaced, I'll get that when I have the money.

The odometer is stuck at 80,510, been stuck for a couple months.

A new temp gauge needed put in.

General Comments:

Minus the repairs needed done on the car, I love it.

It's quick on the pickup and goes fast once you get going.

The speaker system sounded great until I busted the front speakers.

Sicne the cabin is large enough I can fit five people in the car at a time.

I have a problem with no cupholders, I fixed that by buying a cupholder caddy.

The trunk space is large, making it easier to take a lot of extra stuff with you.

I would recommend a Sunbird to anyone buying their first car.

1994 Pontiac Sunbird LE 2.0 F1 from North America

Summary:

Decent small/first car for what you'll pay

Faults:

Both sway pins broke at different times over the past year. Relatively easy and cheap fix.

Both motor mounts needed to be replaced to fix exceptional vibration when idling in drive.

One of the card-board OEM speakers blew (my fault).

Torque Converter Lock-Up sensor went bad last summer. I just disconnected it rather than buy a new TC, but I'm sure it's hurting my gas mileage. It did not affect driving performance however.

Front brake job last fall.

Replaced rear brake pads.

Rear struts have recently gone bad and need replacing.

Gas gauge stops before yellow line. Not really a problem once you run it out of gas the first time.

Passenger seat adjustment lever was broken either when I bought it or soon after. (You have to pull a wire beneath the seat in order to slide it backward or forward)

Exceptional rust has developed on the bottom of the doors and around the rear wheel wells. (It was rustless when I bought it, but I've seen this on a lot of Sunbirds)

General Comments:

This is my first car and it's never done me serious wrong.

It's heavy and sluggish for its size, but nothing awful if you’re not planning on racing. It does lack passing power though.

The car still gets decent gas mileage despite the torque converter no longer locking as it should. (I'd estimate between 25-30mpg).

Most of the materials throughout the car feel fairly cheap, but hold up surprisingly well.

Seats are exceptionally comfortable if you favor a softer, less supportive design, especially in the back bench.

Good overall head room and leg room.

My pontoon boat handles comparably.

The cup spots (not really holders) in the door pockets are more or less useless if you plan on not spilling stuff all over the side of your door.

The car feels generally very solid.

1994 Pontiac Sunbird LE 2.0L OHC from North America

Summary:

A very reliable car... more so than many newer cars, in my opinion

Faults:

The only things that have really gone wrong with this car are general maintenance things. For instance, I needed to replace the heater core (there was a leak when I bought it, but the replacement was only $200CDN - labour included), and I needed a new water pump and timing belt (The car still had the originals).

I also needed a new sway bar link, and there is a hole in the back wheel well that goes into my trunk, but I've fixed all that, and very cheaply (only spent about $140 altogether for it).

Also my ignition control module died on me one day, but it was about $100 to replace. These all occured in the first 2 months of me owning the car, and since then I've had no problems (knock on wood).

General Comments:

The car is extremely reliable and puts up with my driving. I take care of my cars, but I accelerate and shift hard, and the car keeps up, and more importantly, so does the clutch.

The seats are very comfortable (bucket seats) and the layout of the interior is rather eye-pleasing.

The car accelerates very quickly.
