1988 Porsche 928 S4 5.0 V8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

There really is no substitute

Faults:

Exhaust blowing.

Oxygen sensor.

General Comments:

Best to get to know as much as possible about the car, otherwise lack of attention to the car means big bills.

Performance and handling are sensational for the price you pay. This is after all - a Porsche. A surprisingly, very under rated car.

Lots of help available on various internet sites to tackle mechanical problems, and improve the already exhilarating performance.

1988 Porsche 928 S4 5.0L V8 from North America

Summary:

Most fun you can have with your clothes on

Faults:

This vehicle is an absolute pleasure to drive, and gets a lot of looks. It must be maintained and serviced. If a Porsche dealership is utilized, deep pockets are a must. Unless you spend mega bucks, it is the best of the best.

There are many owner support groups via the Internet that save owners, and many parts suppliers other than dealers available on the web. In the years that I have operated mine, I have found it to be super reliable, and the ultimate for long trips with 2 people.

The largest item of concern is the timing belt that should be replaced every 40,000 miles or so. Average cost is $1500 - $2,000.

Some cracks in the leather dash are normal, and can be repaired.

General Comments:

The car is very quick above 80 mph. Very little wind noise, and one of the best handling and predictable vehicles I have driven. 18 mpg should be expected. I have found that most owners get over 80% of their money back after years of ownership.

I would not purchase one for a teenager.

1988 Porsche 928 s4 5.0 32v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast big comfortable shark like

Faults:

Had bad leak from gearbox... cheap replacement though..100 pounds UK..switch and gasket...

Power steering leak... (bad)

General Comments:

A very nice looking car, for a start. It is an automatic which is nice in traffic, but the car is by far best on the open road, where it is designed for. Is a great cruise at over 100 mph vehicle... although its illegal so prepare to get points on your license.

Handles very well, gearbox is in the rear more and the balance is good.

1988 Porsche 928 S4 5L 32v from Netherlands

Summary:

Wonderful sports car

Faults:

When I bought the car the fuel computer was bad. I used my "discount" to replace the fuel computer 1000$.

The power steering leaked a bit. I had it rebuilt at 150.000km 600$.

The transmission started to slip at 160.000 km, which had to be rebuild at a cost of 2500$. All other things are normal maintenance.

The interior is in top condition, and the exterior is still very good.

General Comments:

This car is one big joy to me. The driving is superb, fast, sleek, stable, and safe. The exhaust roars with a deep sound when the V8 starts supplying the 320 hp. The Auto-Transmission conceils the enormous power and acceleration capabilities, but it shows quickly that a lot of other cars are seriously outclassed by this German sports GT.

The car is now 14 years old, so some things need to be taken care of. You should consider this as a hobby, and not as daily transportation if you drive a lot.

The 928s4 is my nr. one and has never let me down yet. I think it is still VERY good looking.

1988 Porsche 928 S4 5.0 from North America

Summary:

Best value super car for the money

Faults:

The car had been sitting unmaintained for a couple of years before I bought it. To return it to good operating condition, I had to replace/service:

LH computer.

O-rings in the air conditioning.

Steering rack.

Wheels aligned.

General Comments:

Exceptional GT performance.

At 0 - 60 MPH in about 6.2, it's not the fastest super car off the line, but incredible power from 80 MPH to its top speed of around 160 MPH.

The shark is as comfortable on the highway at 140 MPH, as it is at 70 MPH. Very responsive with excellent feedback, without ever making you feel like you're losing control.

The V8 comes alive at 4000 RPM, giving full use of the available 317 lb/ft torque.

The build quality is excellent, and the car can run all day at high speeds without any complaint.

Stock suspension is very good for daily driving, and easily tuned for specific uses.

The interior is remarkably comfortable for long drives, and has all the creature comforts you would expect to find in a luxury sedan.

For proper maintenance, it is critical to have a knowledgeable and experienced 928 mechanic available to you, and to keep up to date on proper maintenance.

There are at least three excellent sources in the USA for parts that are much less expensive than from the dealer.

Very enthusiastic support from 928 owners world wide through www.rennlist.org and www.928OC.org. Owners really support each other with help and advice.

Don't be afraid of higher mileage cars. Most of the body on the 928 is aluminum, so rust is not generally an issue. The engine block is a alloy masterpiece that will hold up for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Unless you have time and money to burn, buy the newest model you can afford in the best condition you can find.

I have a GT90 and it is a Gran Turismo! A rare car, in handling mountain bends and sweeping highways with superb ease. This a racer and not to driven to polo for third gear demands more than city limits have to offer. I noticed non of your drivers have this masterpiece of German engineering. What a lucky Crocodile Dundee I am!
