2000 Renault Clio 16v Sport 1.6 16v from South Africa

Summary:

Nice all-rounder, even if a bit pricey

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

Very nice sturdy car. Ideal for my wife as a runabout. I must admit I drive it as often as I can as well, cause it is very quick and nimble to drive.

2000 Renault Clio Sport 172 2.0 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Makes you smile and smile

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

This car is fantastic. It is barking mad when you get above 4000+ revs, a bit like a baby Impreza Turbo.

The styling is great, it looks good inside, but that engine... Everyone should have one.

I completely agree with this guy, I have had mine for 7 weeks and I love it to bits...

Best thing that I've done in it so far, had a 3 way race with an M3 and an Evo Merc, kicked both their asses!!!

Quality car!!

Yeah I have to admit a 172 is faster than an M3 (Not!!!)

Did your 172 accidently come with an extra 200bhp and you have clearly managed to shave 2 seconds off your 0-60 time, not to mention add about 40mph to your top end.

2000 Renault Clio 172 Sport 2.0 16v from Greece

Summary:

Ultra quick

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Superb performance and ride.

Well built.

Lacks some feeling on the steering wheel (well, compared to my previous car). Also the ABS comes in a bit early, but otherwise the brakes are fantastic.

I agree with comments already said, a car with this performance has no right returning a fuel consumption of 47.5 mpg over a distance of 150 miles on rural B and A roads. It is bliss to deal with hotshots who take this car for granted especially White Van jockeys!!!

I have a W reg Clio 172 and the whole lefthand side of my engine is being replaced, but yes I agree, very fast.

2000 Renault Clio S 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

The tape deck failed within a month, but it was a blessing as I upgraded to a CD player.

General Comments:

I really like this car. I think it looks great, has a good spec and an attractive and well thought interior.

Bad points? Nothing serious, the white dials aren't that easy to read in twilight and perhaps the steering "feel" could be improved a little bit. Also, I wasn't that impressed to find they now come with a 3 year warranty less than 4 months after I got mine.

My brother has a Clio S and it is also fantastic. he has a dial that makes the dash display lights brighter or duller and I am sure all have them. have a look.

2000 Renault Clio Sport 172 2.0 16v from Netherlands

Summary:

Direct X speed interface to your nerve centre

Faults:

Nothing really, except for a loose rubber next to a front wheel.

Still under investigation by the dealer: a ringing sound at the back (exhaust?) at full throttle and high revs (>6500 rpm).

General Comments:

This car is really cool. 0-100-0 km/h in 11 seconds... 0-100 in 7 and 100-0 in 4!

Strong points, in order of importance:

1. Faaaaaaaaaast.

2. Gripppppppppp.

3. Brake.brake.brake.great.brakes.

4. Scree-ee-eeaming engine at high revs.

5. Nice, sporty and comfy on the inside.

6. Luxury equipment.

Weak points, IMHO:

1. The springs are a little too soft for the (cornering) speeds the car reaches.

2. Needs a little more feedback through the steering wheel.

3. Light and nervous at high (>170 km/h) speeds.

4. Noisy at speeds over 140 km/h.

5. Ugly, big steering wheel and upright seat position.

6. Needs RON 98 according to the manual... Expensive!

Overall downside: My last 306 XSI had better road handling.

BUT...

EVERY time I have to take the car somewhere (or does the car take ME somewhere?) I look forward to it... every ride is a feast... I even look forward every evening, to the 20 km trip to work the next morning! At many nights, the car just takes me out for 40 minutes or so, to never-never-land.

E.g.:

For my company, I am the first contact for the burglary and fire alarms. For the first time, I love it when they call me outta my bed at 3.37 am to go out and have a look at the building! Call me nuts! I love it!

I have owned a Clio Renault Sport since the 12th of January, have since added 5500 kms. You're right, it's addictive. My last car was a Mégane 1.9 dTi (big difference). The Clio is in Pearl Black (better than the "everybody has it" Titanium Grey).

I live in Portugal, Algarve, and although the weather is fine, I recently found out that water creeps inside the car below the rear seat. Gonna take it to the dealer during this week.

The rest is perfect - FAST, GRIPPY, HUGE braking power, and best of all - a real performance car that you can live with every day!

Interesting reading, I've never driven this car but I pickup one up next week. somehow I don't think I will be disappointed:)

I'm considering buying one. After your comments I'm definately having one. Cheers.

I've just ordered mine for delivery in December and you people are driving me crazy!

7th Aug 2001, 06:41

I've put down a deposit for my 172 to be delivered in October! A week before my birthday - what a treat! I really, really can't wait.

18th Aug 2001, 10:50

For all of you people who recently ordered a Clio Sport.

If I were you I would cancel my order right away and wait (not too long) for the NEW Clio Sport, that should be a BANG.

One of the improvements over the old one is the steering wheel which is one of the strong weaknesses in the Clio, no longer will you feel like a bus driver and that alone is worth the wait!

Ishai.
