2002 Renault Clio Extreme 1.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Money burner and totally unreliable

Faults:

Engine cutting out after driving through a puddle. Unbelievable and endless diagnosis of problems with the computer in the engine and wear to the wires, due to the 'tamper proof box'. I am over £1200 into a garage bill, and the problem is not yet over. I need a new computer, which has to be re programmed by Renault and a lot of wires have needed replacing. I understand that MANY people have had the same problem, and it is not until Renault have had a certain number of complaints, then they won't contribute to the repairs. Has anyone had any luck?

General Comments:

Slow, and one problem after another.

2002 Renault Clio Authentique 1.2 16v from South Africa

Summary:

A nice little car spoiled by electrical faults and high service costs

Faults:

The airbag light came on - solved. Traced to a simple loose plug under the driver's seat.

The radio started cutting out when I go over sharp bumps - still unresolved.

The whole car electrical system momentarily switches off and then on again sometimes when I switch the headlights from low to high beam. (Intermittent problem that no mechanic can trace.)

The low beam headlights dip in output when I use the indicators.

The fog-lamp warning light glows faintly when I brake.

General Comments:

I really like this little car. I bought it as an economical commuter, and it fulfills that role fantastically. Runs well, stick to the road and is very comfortable for it's size.

The intermittent electrical problems drive me up the wall, though. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Maintenance through the agents is VERY expensive! Service for service, this car costs about 8 - 10 times more than my Mercedes to run.

I have a Renault Clio 03 plate for the last year. Have had nothing but problems with the electrical symbol, which keeps coming on, and not being able to rev above 30mph on clock (limp mode). Had the sensor accelerator done (£120), and throttle body cleaned (£80). Still have the same problem.

My only way round this is getting a friend, bless him, to clear the codes every couple of weeks. Stressful or what?

I have researched this, and realize this is a problem Renault has with their cars!!! Still no answer from Renault.

2002 Renault Clio Expression + 1.2 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Pish

Faults:

Well what can I say, I am at the stage of wanting my car to go on fire. I have had it 2 and half years now and my problem started 6 weeks ago... the car is misfiring. Chugging away, pulling back on me when trying to drive, and the revs are dropping.

I had had the ignition coil pack replaced, spark plugs replaced, oil change (which garage suggested and also the air filter), been on a diagnostic tuning thing at the garage, and nothing can be diagnosed... I'm fuming.

What else can I do? I am not spending loads of money on my heap of junk in-case it's not sorted. I am really angry now.

General Comments:

Useless piece of crap.

These are common problems, get rid of it quickly!

2002 Renault Clio from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Rubbish

Faults:

Engine management light on. Changed air filter, CAT, crank sensor, several diagnostic tests used as well.

Seals didn't work on windscreen, let water in on electrics, sikaflex worked.

Seal on sunroof went, new seal was needed.

Indicating wrong way. Indicator column and UCH box replaced.

General Comments:

This car is mechanically not bad, electronically a nightmare.

Mechanic has said change the throttle body next, at a cost of close to £500. Having read quite a few of the posts, I want to find out more about wiring loom being rubbed on by black box.

I won't be buying another Clio, that's for sure. This one has cost me over £1k in problems since January.
