2002 Renault Laguna Sport Tourer Dynamique 2.0 dct from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Buy something else! Reliability is worrying and let down by dealer service.

Faults:

Turbocharger/inter-cooler replaced at 58000 miles. The old one rattled like a pebble in a can.

Air Con. compressor replaced 59900 miles (just managed to get that inside the warranty) This made a similar noise to the turbo - I was told by my local garage that the noise was normal for a diesel!

Steering rack replaced @ 58000 miles also along with a ball joint.

Cd player skips across tracks like a worn out vinyl LP. This has been repaired, but is still skipping.

Very bad radio reception on FM.

Ashtray lid replaced. The old one just wouldn't stay down. I wouldn't mind, but I don't smoke and hardly use it.

Handbrake is very sloppy even after servicing. You really have to pull up hard to get the car to stay still.

There's a clunk from the engine compartment when the car starts, but the garage can't locate the source of the noise.

The washer bottle empties very quickly. With headlights on, by washing the windscreen, you also wash the lights aswell. You don't get a choice in this.

General Comments:

Don't buy the Continental tyres for this car, they last about 10000 miles if you're lucky and at £130 per corner, that's a big outlay. Get Michelin! They're a little more expensive, but well worth the extra.

The air con compressor should have been replaced at the 54000 mile service, but the garage told me that the noise it was making was normal. They tried to fob me off with the noisy diesel spiel so I got a second opinion... just in time.

I swapped the Lexus for a more economical car, but this car is not at all as economical as I had been led to believe.

Other than that, it is comfortable to drive, although the seats are fiddly to position correctly, and there's loads of room to carry all those spare parts around.

Great looking car, but looks can be deceptive.

2002 Renault Laguna Dynamique 1.9 DCI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very poorly built car, which is nothing like the original laguna

Faults:

The clutch and flywheel were replaced at 39000 miles.

Rear windscreen was replaced due to poor radio reception.

A air leak in the fuel system caused starting problems which took 4 visits to the dealership before it was found.

The ball joints were replaced at 41000 miles along with the rear axle bushes.

The card reader and key were replaced at 42000 miles.

Passenger electric window regulator broke at 51000 miles.

The turbo and inter-cooler failed at 59000 miles.

General Comments:

The car looks well and is a comfortable car to drive. The reliability let it down badly I previously had a laguna mark 1 which was a much superior car.

2002 Renault Laguna Authentique 1.6 from Norway

Summary:

Nice driving, poor quality

Faults:

1. Doors refuse to close when it's cold weather. (Door lock mechanisms replaced, but problem reappears)

2. Different interior details loosened, like ventilation knobs, seat chassis.

3. Corrosion on brake discs (probably due to absence of emergency braking after washing)

4. Injection valve broke

5. Seats and interior trim seems having been used a LOT compared to the relatively low KM.

General Comments:

Very comfortable, with long-journey qualities. Excellent seats, nice suspension, and a POWERFUL 1.6 110 hp engine, low fuel costs. Bad detail quality, and I'm not too confident with reliability. Twice I had to leave the car when it was impossible to shut the doors. The Norwegian dealer is, however, a great experience; next time I'll go for the Volvo, and have the same great dealer and workshop :-)

How does the car perform in cold weather (except from the door-locks)? I'm considering buying a 2002 Laguna 1,8, and I'm a bit insecure as of how it will deal with the freezing Norwegian climate.

I have a '06 Volvo V50 (great car!) and I share your experiences with the Volvo/Renault dealers, my local dealer is simply the best I've ever come across!

I wouldn't recommend a 2002/2003 Laguna II to anyone, even Renault recently admitted that especially the early Laguna II models are rubbish.

After 3,5 years and 85000 miles my Laguna II felt like it was 15 years old and did 1850000 miles. The very long service record could have been from a 300000 mile car!

The resell value was painful, but now I am happy in my not so sharp looking, but at least very reliable Toyota Avensis.
