A tyre "bursting for no apparent reason"; it's probably the TYRE's fault, and NOT the car's... no??

1997 Renault Megane RT Classic 1.6 from Malaysia

Summary:

Good bargain car compared to Japanese cars in same category.

Faults:

1. Minor leak in the steering hydraulic oil hose (just noticed, but could've been there all the while...).

2. Faulty air-conditioner coil (as early as 60k km!)

3. Noisy front left suspension.

4. Wheel alignment biased towards the left (very noticeable when on the highway).

General Comments:

1. Very sluggish standard engine. Overtaking even a Proton 1.5 was a hard one. Performance increased substantially after getting some parts modified, eg: 4-2-1 extractor, racing centre exhaust muffler, Split-fire plugs, 9.9mm plug cables, K&N air filter, & Broquet fuel catalyst.

2. Renault Malaysia has had several complaints on the left-side-wheel alignment. I've able to solve this only after nearly 2 and a half years driving!

3. That faulty air-conditioning coil was really a surprise. Later learnt that mine was the last of 3 units registered in Johor Bahru Malaysia to change the coil due to the same problem.

1997 Renault Megane RT Sport 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Never again - A bad experience!

Faults:

This car was an endless list of problems:

First of all after 2 days, the electric sunroof jammed then a week later the catalytic converter went (luckily both were under warranty). The dealer replaced both, but 2 months later, the cat went again (supposed a faulty part)!

Next, the rocker cover gasket went, leaking oil all over the engine, followed by the water pump, which meant I had to get the car towed back to the dealer!

To be fair, the dealer was excellent on all occasions, but to have this much trouble with a 1997 car was getting a little beyond a joke! Needless to say, I only had the car for a total of 9 months, before buying a Saxo VTR.

General Comments:

The Megane looks the part, with loads of features as standard, and is quite comfortable, but I can't believe that so many things could go wrong to such a new car - what would it have been like in another couple of years?

1997 Renault Megane RT 1.6 8V from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good car - poor engine

Faults:

After having the car about 6 months, a rattling noise started to develop from the engine when pulling. It was later diagnosed as being big-end bearings costing being about £2000, of which Renault wouldn't pay anything because the car wasn't purchased from a Renault authorised dealer. Due to the car having done less than 20,000 at the time - a problem of this magnitude is pretty outrageous.

General Comments:

I purchased a second Megane from a Renault dealer, because I liked the car so much (PLEASE READ THOSE COMMENTS - IT MAY AFFECT YOUR BUYING DECISION!!!!)

1997 Renault Megane RTE Sport 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

PAS hydraulic pipe leaking (£291).

Oil leak from cylinder head gasket (£173).

Brake discs scored (£210).

Backbox corroded (£120, only 2 years old).

Faulty indicator switch (£92).

Faulty rear wiper switch (£92).

Loose connection on starter motor (have to get the bonnet up and reseat the connector now and then).

Exhaust rattles since it was new.

General Comments:

I've had this car since new, it's done 27,000 miles and I've taken care of it.

This car has proved to be a complete pile of junk and I will NEVER buy a Renault again. The Dealer has been completely incompetent and they should be ashamed of themselves.
