1993 Rover - Austin 200 214i 1.4i 16v twin cam from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent 1st car!!

Faults:

Surprise surprise, Rover 200 owners will not be surprised to hear that my cylinder head went shortly after buying the car, and the clutch, the radiator, and the driver's window runner!! But I think that most of this was due to the previous owner/abuser of the car.

General Comments:

The car cost only £1800 which is not bad. It makes an ideal 1st car for anyone wanting a bit of performance and handling. It shames cars costing 5 times as much when it comes to the old traffic light "Grand Prix"! It's also roomy and comfortable enough for long journeys and fairly economical too.

Very quick for a 1.4 16v.

1993 Rover - Austin 200 216 GTi 1.6 16v single cam from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Two sets of rear brake discs in two years. Poor quality Rover exhaust parts.

General Comments:

Seriously under-rated, very quick, very cheap. Will go forever, mine has clocked up 141,000 miles. Don't buy one in 'off white'.

1993 Rover - Austin 200 214 SLi 1.4i from UK and Ireland

Faults:

I picked up the car at 52,000 miles, almost straight away I needed to change the tyres and exhaust.

At 60,000 brakes, timing belt etc. All the usual stuff.

Alternator has packed in at 60,000, needs replacing.

Gearbox getting a little tough to use. May need replacing, but I won't...

I'll be upgrading to a 200Vi real soon!

General Comments:

Superb car. It cost very little to buy, and apart from exhaust/tyres etc. every day running costs are exceptional.. I regularly get 350-400 miles from 35 litres of fuel (about a full tank).

Performance for a 1.4 is exceptional, I just hope the 1.8vi is equally as good.

1993 Rover - Austin 200 216GTi 1.6 twin cam petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Tracking goes off, so eats tyres???

Wheel nuts.

New brake pads.

General Comments:

Stupidly fast car, when revved above 4750rpm. Loves to rev all the way up to 7000rpm!! The car loves to be driven hard. Crappy Rover build quality.

1993 Rover - Austin 200 216 Gsi Auto 1.6 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

New cooling fan switch at 25k.

Exhaust rear box baffles blown but not rusted out.

Front suspension roll bar bushes groan on braking.

General Comments:

Well finished car inside and out. Comfortable ride, nice smooth engine (Honda) and Autobox, parts can be a bit expensive.

1993 Rover - Austin 200 218 SD 1.9 diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

No major problems, other than replacing standard service parts as per schedule. Rear suspension bushes are in need of replacement at 86k miles (causing tyre wear).

General Comments:

A good sound motor, has covered 86k miles, as is still going strong without a hint of rust. A vast improvement from the Mastro/Montego!
