1995 Rover - Austin 200 214 Sei 1.4 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Car was 2yrs old with 22K on clock when I bought it - now 3.5 yrs and 35k on clock.

Needed new alternator shortly after buying it - common complaint on most makes of mid-sized family cars apparently.

Other than that nothing.

General Comments:

Very smart looks - Rover alloys, metallic paint, half-leather sports seats, wood etc.

Great spec too, electrics, immboliser etc.

Overall - A beautiful looking car, quick for a 1.4, nice gear shift and safe handling.

Will probably go for the highly praised diesel next time.

12,000 miles in a year and a half is below average for yearly mileage. This is not a bad thing. The alternator problem is minor and is just the look of the draw and not the fault of the car.

Why move to diesel? Although economic, the performance is lower and after time the engine will get noisy (as with all diesel engines).

Advice: Stick with petrol. Get the injectors cleaned every 10,000 miles and you will be laughing!

I agree, Rovers are great!

1995 Rover - Austin 200 218 SDTi 1.8 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing really.

General Comments:

It is a really pish car.

When the turbo kicks in it is really nippy.

It leaves all those pish XR3i's and XR2's for dead.

1995 Rover - Austin 200 SLi 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

All exhaust valves replaced TWICE. Crankshaft oil seal went which knackered clutch. Also, gearbox oil seal had gone too. Exhaust tail box replaced and both front tyres. Thermostat gone and fuse blew to electric cooling fan, which resulted in car overheating on M25!

General Comments:

This car is a DOG. I will NEVER by another Rover. Take this as a warning - steer clear. Buy Japanese, Buy Volvo, but don't ever, ever buy a Rover. And, to top it all, we have just been ripped off to the tune of £400 by a Rover dealer for a 60,000/ 5 year service - when the car is only 3 years old and has only done 49,000. On top of this they wanted to replace the front discs, but I said no.

1995 Rover - Austin 200 220 Coupe 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

2 weeks after buying the car it needed a new engine due to piston slap on cold starts. Now eleven months later it's doing it again but Rover refuse to do anything this time, even though it's still under guarantee.

Apparently it's a "characteristic" of this engine.
