I used to have a 216 GSi. Mine did 110,000 before I wrote it off. Brilliant Honda engine in it sounded like new till the end and had loads of performance. Very reliable and under-rated car. The last person who says he had loads of problems - I suspect your car was either clocked, rebuilt or driven previously by some idiot. The car is only Rover badged - it has a Honda engine and Honda body and was built alongside the Honda equivalent model. It was Honda that turned Rover's fortunes around. When BMW took over, it is the new models that have shown to be unreliable.

Rover are 'Rubbish' eh? I've had a 414 passed down from My grandad who bought it from one owner 12 years ago, from then it went to my dad, he treated it VERY badly.. now it's up to me to re-do it, and I have to say, I haven't found a single mechanical fault.. good little runner, not broken down on me yet, and I've been driving it for about 3 months with the garage saying the pump will soon need to be replaced, the 400 series just run and run..

I was recently given a rover 400 by my mother who could no longer stand the fact that it was so unreliable. On getting the car I got the head gasket changed as that was the problem. After putting the new gasket and a lot of money into the car everything was going well, for about 3 months when the unreliability came back to haunt me. The car was only eight years old with 45000 miles on it when it finally gave up for good. I have now bought a 92 golf and have yet to find an engine problem.

I've got a 416SLi, 116,000 miles bought 3 years ago and it's absolutely useless.
Constant brake problems. Noises from suspension & engine that nobody (not even an RAC inspection) can find the cause of. Trim rattles. Exhaust problems. Steering column been replaced & too many other faults to mention.
Whatever you do, don't buy a Rover 400, they are poorly made rubbish.
No wonder Rover went under - I'll never buy one again.
