How do I change this relay?

10th Feb 2020, 05:34

Hi and many thanks for your post. Had stalling issues, then the car wouldn't start and when it eventually did it would run a little, idle rough, then stall. Removing the immobilizer appears to have fixed the problem. Very simple to do and cost me 60 cents in 5mm fuel hose. Thanks again!

I have a 1998 2.3L gas Musso. Here in the Philippines Mercedes won't touch them, so it's difficult to find a really good mechanic. I had a top hose go and blow the head gasket; fixed by cowboys, and after 12 minutes it blew again. 1 year, two more top overhauls and two snapped inlet camshafts later I found a top mechanic. The car was off the road for 8 months whilst I found a VVT and oil pump across the globe. I have a fully rebuilt engine and am mobile again. During the time out I got to talk with service managers at a German Motors specialist and I commented that the car had done only 130 thousand km and that it seemed to me that during my 76 years I had come to the conclusion that high performance cars were also high maintenance and low reliability cars. I was corrected by the manager. "Yes you are right, but these engines are not high performance. They are low performance. In Germany they are used by taxis and after they have done 1 million km they are sold to Russia where they do another million km.."

If your body and chassis are good, then don't discard your problematic SSangyong as a piece of crap. The drive train is Mercedes and with good mechanics working on it there is no reason why you should not get 500 thousand km out of your car or double that.

I have a 1998 Ssangyong Musso GX220, the 3.2Ltr Merc engine. It has a re-start problem, it will start OK, but when turned off it will not re-start. Also it will not go over 4000 R.P.M. as it hunts badly.

I have changed the fuel filter, pump, coils, plugs, plug leads, over voltage relay, knock sensor, cam sensor, air duct heat sensor, ECU sent away for checking; but OK. ALSO vacuum hoses are good, and I replaced the vacuum valve on the passenger inner wing, as well as renewing the crankshaft sensor wire; up to where it decaded on the wiring loom. Still no joy.

Is there anyone out there that can help? Have covered about 130,000 miles from 2002.

Thanks to everyone who might know the problem.

Phil.

It seems the Merc engine has reached the end of its life. Probably no solution other than a complete engine rebuild.

Does it fail to re-start after the engine has warmed up, does it always pretty much start from cold? Try checking the relay that controls the fuel pump, it probably is a general engine relay that controls that plus some other functions like the ECU. It's possible that there may be a hairline crack in the solder within the relay's circuit board which expands and cuts off when warmed up.

I have the same/similar problem. I start in the morning with no problems. After a 20 min run, it won't start after I stop for about 15 min. It will swing very well, I have to wait for about and hour, then it starts beautifully. I changed to a crank sensor from another Musso. Now when I stop, it won't start even immediately, it will swing well. But after about an hour it will start.

Does that sound like the crank sensor?

I have the same problem. I also changed to another 2nd hand crank sensor, was worse. Then I bought an after market crank sensor. I have the same problem. Can someone please help.

Hate to tell you this, but your head gasket has failed, allowing water to enter a cylinder. It'll run like a hairy goat until the cylinder clears. Find a bottle of head gasket sealer and use that instead of replacing the gasket. It'll do the job properly and save a lot of swearing.
