1998 Subaru Impreza 22B 2.2 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Awesome

Faults:

Nothing except I needed new spark plugs after 20,000km because I absolutely thrashed it.

General Comments:

The 22B is the best all round car for under $200,000 blowing away things like Evo's and the odd Skyline GTR, and even Porsches.

You guys are so lucky in other parts of the world, you guys actually get the full blown 22b STi. Here in Canada we get the useless 2.5RS, it's an accountants performance car. Looks like Colin McCraes daily driver, performs like Moms Volvo 240 Station Wagon. I'd give one of my kidneys for a 22b, any takers?

Finally this year Subaru gave us the WRX, well, WRX Diet. The looks are horrid and the performance decent. I am looking to get a 2.5RS and getting a 22b engine from Japan to turn my Subbie into a Mustang, Camaro and Corvette killer, HEHEHE :)

Although I'm not sure exactly where you are, but I am thinking New Zealand due to the fact that they aren't allowed on the road in Australia.

I would give anything to be able to own a 22B. There were only 4 of those beauties imported into Australia. I mean they allow Ferrari's on the road and look at those. WHY not allow a 22B. This car is just so damn good that no one here can even drive it. What's the deal.

Well maybe I should move to New Zealand and buy one because the pleasure of driving one of those would be the best feeling in this world. Especially to beat a GTR or even an EVO at the lights. :)

How much were the Subaru 22b's when new?

Also, what BHP did they come with standard..?

9th Dec 2004, 03:06

I've driven a 450 bhp 22B and it was brutal - 0-100 in under 10 seconds easily! Only comes with around 280 hp as standard, but the block can take a lot more. A lot lighter than the newer models as well.

1998 Subaru Impreza WRX STi4 2.0 turbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

If you are an enthusiastic driver, buy one

Faults:

Cracked brake disc.

Throttle body sensor lead makes intermittent contact.

General Comments:

I have had a lot of performance cars, but nothing comes close to this - it would be a very brave (or foolish) driver of any other type of car barring a VERY select few who could live with a WRX.

The handling is beautifully balanced on its 17" F1 shod wheels, with only a hint of under-steer in extremis. Wet weather barely affects it either.

The performance is brutal, but highly accessible. A quicker point to point car on real roads doesn't exist.

Don't buy for economy, shiver at the cost of insurance and buy shares in a good tyre company.

Ride comfort is on the filling rattling side of firm - your dad wouldn't like it, though creature comforts aren't bad - air con, decent ICE (I think - I don't use it much - prefer the sound of the glorious flat four...), cosseting seats.

Summary:

A practical pocket rocket

Faults:

Nothing at all, it's wonderful!

General Comments:

Drinks fuel but who cares. We only live once and driving an Impreza is something everyone should get the chance to experience!

1998 Subaru Impreza 22B from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Off the scale excellence :D

Faults:

Power engineering remap resulted in a new turbo, valve stem seals and manifold, as well as new pistons, rods and crank.

Power Engineering of Uxbridge London say it is an oil supply problem. A shame, since the car only lasted 600 miles since they remapped it!

22B are fantastic un-modified, come to http://www.22B.com

1998 Subaru Impreza WRX 2.0 turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

High performance bargain

Faults:

- Cable came loose and was bouncing off the firewall.

- Lost pressure in the window water sprayer.

General Comments:

The best value for money car available in Australia (performance car or otherwise). Superb reputation; good road presence; excellent reliability and goes like the clappers.

However the insides are a little bland and I'm getting a bit older where niceties are sought (eg CD player, less road noise, softer suspension) and I'm sick of young teenagers attempting to drag you off at every stop light.

Having said that, it is the best road car I have ever bought.

1998 Subaru Impreza GT 2.0 turbo from Netherlands

Summary:

Peerless at the price

Faults:

Nothing. Car parking dings are a problem because there are no side rubbing strips, and the panels are very thin.

General Comments:

Great seats. Good build but cheap materials are evident. The car may well last well, but it doesn't always feel that way.

1998 Subaru Impreza STi 2.0 turbo petrol from Japan

Summary:

Performance, performance and more performance

Faults:

Nothing serious as I've only had it for a short while. Tyres get bare too quickly due to cars power.

General Comments:

Amazing, absolutely amazing performance and road holding, in the wrong hands it can certainly prove fatal.

1998 Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 AWD 2.0 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

It gives you a second childhood

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Superb car, turbo lag a problem below 3000rpm, STi VI filter and exhaust system have improved mid range pick up. Front seats are the MOST comfortable ever! Front brakes need uprating - I'm told AP pads, racing brake fluid and new discs are the answer - the brakes work as they are on the 98 spec but the feel is non existant - and they fade quickly when used hard. Odd! but I've never wanted to do stuff and add bits to a car till I got the Scooby!

1998 Subaru Impreza Turbo 2.0 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Members of the general public's eyes have gone green with envy.

General Comments:

208 b.h.p.

4 wheel drive.

Very able and agile car. Resale values excellent for UK cars.

For the asking price nothing can touch the explosive performance and "s**t to a blanket" handling.
