1992 Subaru Justy GL 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable little beauty

Faults:

Car coughing and stalling at start - that's it!

General Comments:

Brilliantly reliable jalopy. Despite the slow start, she does start every time. Just changed the air filter and sparks, have yet to change the oil, and she is purring like a tiger on the road now. Still not as swift as the little Signet was before, but when you put the foot down, it gets up to a good speed without breaking a sweat.

The only downside is the uncomfortable seats, but I am used to this after the Vivio and the Signet. I have plenty of padding, so not that bad a problem. :)

I like the old radio, despite only the AM works; it's great for picking up foreign channels; always makes the news sound better to me.

I hope we get through the test, but I was lucky that this car had been really well looked after by one careful lady owner.

1992 Subaru Justy GL 1.0 from Israel

Summary:

An agile and reliable car that we are going to miss in the future

Faults:

The air conditioning (installed here in Israel - not an original build by Subaru) is very sensitive, and it stopped working a short while after I have bought it. Even though I have spent about $1,000 (4,000 ILS) in fixing it during half a year, it still makes problems keeping the little car cold during the Israeli summers.

My radiator blew at about 140,000 KM. I have installed a replacement radiator, as the original was too expensive. Working great so far, but cooling fluid is still leaking (slowly).

The car is experiencing severe rust especially around the frame of the rear window.

Also, dashboard starts to crack, as the car has always parked on sunny areas.

Sometimes the car's engine stops with no reason, I believe the carburetor needs cleaning.

Besides the above the car is great. It never let me down, even with a broken radiator. I drive it about 200 KM a day frequently, and it seems like me and the car are feeling great about it.

General Comments:

The car is agile, but not very quick. It accelerates well, but struggles on highways. Handling could be better, but the joy it provides is still priceless, compared to modern heavy cars.

Driving a Justy puts a smile on your face. While sitting on the spartan seats, you can actually feel the road while you hear the sound of the engine.

1992 Subaru Justy gli 1.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The rusty justy, but very cool

Faults:

NONE.

General Comments:

The car drives well, but the interior is a bit old and farmie. It needs new seat covers and floor mats and the speaks aren't that good, but when that is fitted the justy will be immense. It accelerates at low speed well, but struggles at high speed.

1992 Subaru Justy GL 1.0 from Malta

Summary:

The perfect city car

Faults:

Carburetor gave severe problems at about 70,000km and 100,000km.

CV Joints needed replacement at 115,000km.

Seats are severely uncomfortable.

General Comments:

I've owned this car for three years now, and the more time passes, the more it continues to surprise me.

The ride has its flaws, especially on Maltese roads, which are worse than the moon's craters... so this problem is justified.

Handling is very good, considering its high center of gravity and aerodynamics. It is not and will never be compared to an Alfa, but at the end of the day it is not an Alfa..

The cabin has a conservative Japanese signature, especially the AM Radio which comes standard. Tuning the latter is very distracting while driving. On the other hand, dials are clear and easy to read. The rev counter comes standard on this model.

The engine itself is a workhorse. If given the right services at the right time, it will definitely last more than 150,000km without giving a penny of trouble. It's fascinating how the scream turns into a roar when revving over 4000rpm, especially on the third gear.

Performance is a strong point, taking into consideration its little 997cc engine. In the city it is able to give the power needed when requested, but obviously it's far from adequate on a highway.

After-sales, in my opinion, is Subaru's only turn-down.
