1990 Subaru Legacy RS Type R 2.0 turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

It is awesomely amazing, and I will definitely be buying another one

Faults:

Clutch blew, but was very worn when I got the car.

Had to replace all seats as they were very worn, also for want of better comfort and style from 1994 RS twin turbo Legacy.

General Comments:

Very very quick car, every STi I raced I won against, smoked off 2.5 turbo Skylines.

Once I replaced the seats, the car was extremely comfortable.

When I put Koni shocks with aftermarket springs in, I noticed the car handled extremely well, stuck to corners really well, and was able to do some 50km/hr corners at 160km/hr.

Unattractive as standard, but with a custom bonnet with a WRX scoop (I put a WRX air intercooler on) and lowered on Advanti racing wheels, it was a beautiful looking car, and definitely had the power to back it up.

1990 Subaru Legacy B4 RSK 2.0 4 cylinder turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Without a doubt, awesome

Faults:

Cambelts - genuine thing to be fixed! also had water pump & other things replaced at the same time.

General Comments:

If you've not owned a Subaru before, then you don't know about the amazing handling they have. My B4 is lowered, and still handles like a dream, without the bumpy road effect from having lowering springs in the car.

I was lucky enough to buy the car from a Subaru specialist, who kept the car in the most pristine condition, up-to-date services & what not. It really shows when driving my B4 compared to others.

I have the leather package in the car with after market chrome trimmings, and although the interior is rather boring, the cupholders in it are amazing counting 6 in total. The car only seats 5!

Turbo lag is a genuine problem as well as the gearbox being a bit gummy, with 1st gear only operational when the car is either stationary or extremely slowed down - My B4 along with 3 others I've driven have this same problem.

They are rather fuel hungry, but if they're driven without your foot being slammed to the floor, $30 fuel can last 3 days.

1990 Subaru Legacy 2.2L from North America

Summary:

Recommended beater that requires little maintenance.

Faults:

Regular maintenance stuff mainly.

Had the brake rotors resurfaced for about $300 with new pads all around.

Clutch was on its way out when I sold the car, but there was about 80k miles on it by then.

Parking brake was worthless.

Sunroof glass can't withstand drunk people sitting on it.

The Wisconsin road salt didn't treat it too well.

General Comments:

Excellent car. Never had any major issues.

I would wind the car up fairly often. Could do a pretty good peal-out.

Got a mid '90s Golf for free while I had the Legacy, and ended up selling the Golf.

Subarus are way more solid than any other imports I have driven. The clutch isn't two touchy, and I actually taught a girlfriend how to drive manual with it.

Loved the 60/40 fold down back seats. Made the car way more versatile.

1990 Subaru Legacy LS AWD 2.2L N/A from North America

Summary:

They don't make em' like this anymore!

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 260,000 miles, only $40 for both sides.

Both original front axles went out, but weren't very expensive.

Original alternator went out, got one for $15 at a junkyard.

Little noises and interior wear and odd quirks that should be expected with 20 years and 350,000 miles.

General Comments:

I LOVE my Legacy, it has only died once when the alternator went out. If I needed to, I would not hesitate to drive it across country.

On trips longer than 2 hours, the seats are pretty uncomfortable, but otherwise the interior is fine, the sunroof stills works great!

Fuel economy is not so great for this type of car, around 23-25mpg, but I am pretty hard on it.

This car was definitely designed for simplicity and reliability, as well as capability on snowy and muddy roads.
