1992 Suzuki Maruti 0.8 from Portugal

Summary:

Bargain

Faults:

Clutch worn at 50000km.

Normal wear and tear; oil, filters, spark plugs.

Lots of rust in the wheels.

General Comments:

4 gears, very soft to drive, handling or gearbox.

Very slow with a max speed of 120km/h.

Good to transport two people inside, and very easy to park in cities due to its small dimensions.

Very reliable and low fuel consumption.

I regret selling this great little car. Should be the people's car in Europe.

2002 Suzuki Maruti from Costa Rica

Summary:

Overall, this car is a very good option for commuting in cities with a flat geography

Faults:

The clutch worn out at 60.000 Km. Had to replace it.

Noise from body and windows started at around 45.000 Km. I guess it is normal for Costa Rica’s poor roads.

It failed to start several times when temperature was low (12 degree Celsius) and nobody seemed to know why.

Original tire size is very difficult to find (145 /12 R)

General Comments:

I have owned this car for almost two years already and it has worked like a champ. Fuel economy is good and it has been a major factor to keep this car.

Its size allows taking paths that bigger cars cannot go through. This is very helpful to escape traffic jams and go around middle-street crashes.

The car does not perform well in hills, however, as the 800cc engine needs to make strenuous efforts to climb the way to my uphill place (else, do not push it, but climb at no more than 20Km per hour). I do not want to ruin the engine, which performs very well in flat surfaces, so I will sell it and get a bigger engine car now.

1984 Suzuki Maruti LX 0.8 from India

Summary:

Best value for money in this hyped car market

Faults:

This is an absolute beauty in respect of running costs and being troublefree. Has excellent carrying ability when used with a limited load of say 2-4 persons on city roads. But the air conditioning is weak when fully loaded. A little difficult in extreme hot weather but could be excellent for cold climes.

General Comments:

Value for money. Used ones are available at 400 UK pounds in India, a throwaway price.

1984-85 models were built mostly in Japan and are better built.

Dear readers.

I am French and believe it or not I am the proud owner of a Maruti 800, very few in France!

I love it and it is great, but it just let me down this week.

I have a problem with the engine starter and I am looking for help, could you give me advice?

The starter does not kick in, I checked the electric motor, it is OK, but the electromagnet doesn't move into position.

I do not know if the problem comes from the starter electromagnet or the ignition key switch.

I am looking for some info regarding the electric circuit or an explanation on cabling of the starter.

Thank you very much for your help.
