2000 Toyota Avensis SR 2.0 D4D from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Under-rated, powerful and stylish

Faults:

Shortly after getting the car. the floating flywheel packed up.

Alarm would ring in the winter, even if driving.

Gear box selector for 5th gear broke.

General Comments:

Very nice car to drive with plenty of take off power, good to drive and gives pretty good miles to gallon ratio; I get approximately 50MPG.

The problem with the floating flywheel/clutch could probably along with the 5th gear problem, in my opinion be put down to having too much torque and not having the flywheel and gearbox set up accordingly.

When getting the flywheel replaced, I opted for a solid conversion kit, as I heard that the floating types generally gave bother.

Good car for long journeys, comfortable, but can be difficult to park as it's very long in comparison to other cars, about the same length as a SWB Transit.

2000 Toyota Avensis SOL 2.0 16v from Poland

Summary:

Would buy again

Faults:

Idle rpm's problem - dealer's mechanic gave up, some folks made it after weeks.

Back wiper failed

Ventilation works wrong during winter (heating all the time - no remorse!)

Brakes squeak.

General Comments:

Comfort over average, good handling, economic is OK (9,5 10,5 LPG / 100 km), low value deprecation.

2000 Toyota Avensis Vermont 1.6 vvti from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great, cheap motoring!!!

Faults:

One of the tyres ran out of tread, £40 for a new one.

Nephew was sick on back seat on the way home from cinema and now daughter won't sit in "boke corner", even though I cleaned it up pretty well.

Had to buy a new bulb for the number plate light to get it through the MOT.

Need to add oil every 1000 miles, but this seems to be normal with this type of engine. There's no blue smoke from the exhaust and there's no leaks - don't know where the oil goes. Anyhow £2 for a litre of oil every month isn't going to break the bank.

Didn't bother taking it to Toyota dealer for service. Changed oil and filter myself in 10 minutes. Don't see much point in paying dealer loads of money to do the same thing.

So only about sixty quid in running expenses for a years driving.

General Comments:

At 106,000 miles the car is still as good as new. I drive it 50+ miles per day, including country lanes without tarmac, huge potholes and really deep puddles (deep enough to stop lesser cars in their tracks).

Engine is still nice and quiet, not like Fords and Vauxhalls I have owned in the past which tend to growl as the bearings have worn away.

Still goes fast enough to overtake a couple of cars at a time and returns 40 MPG average over the last six months motoring.

Have towed some pretty big trailers and caravans, without too much trouble.

Runs great on supermarket petrol.

2000 Toyota Avensis SR 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Nothing, except problem with Toyota dealer when they forgot to re-fill gearbox oil after 50,000 mile service. They fixed this problem under guarantee.

General Comments:

Not a fast car, but very very reliable.

After 103,000 miles car still ran and looked like it was new. No rattles, no breakdowns!

I never had to put oil in the engine! The dipstick level just stayed at MAX all the time.

Tyres seem to last a very long time on this car.

Summary:

A dream come true

Faults:

Had a slight shudder when braking, so I took it to the Dealer where I bought the car and they replaced the Brake disc's and the wheel rims for free.

General Comments:

This car is one of the nicest cars I have driven and owned yet.

2000 Toyota Avensis TD 1.9 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fix the vibration

Faults:

Nothing really, the only problem I have is it shakes and vibrates a lot while driving over 50 MPH. It is a day's work trying to keep it on the road especially in modern side winds. I have had the steering checked and the wheels balanced... I wonder if it could be the alloy wheels?

General Comments:

Although the car is light, it handles great under 50 MPH. Good stopping power, but I find it to have little leg room between driver's seat and steering wheel. also I'm only 5ft 5inches in height, but I keep hitting my head while climbing into the driver's seat. I would like this car if the damn shaking would go away.

Firstly my friend you must check your tires, get all the wheels balanced and aligned. Your vibration problem should go away.

2000 Toyota Avensis GS 2.0 TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Outstanding

Faults:

Indicators don`t cancel.

General Comments:

I bought it without consulting my wife, for our family. She knows nothing about cars. She left me briefly. I drove to work thinking this is the best buy I have ever made. I still do. It is understated elegance, a genie in a bottle.
