General Comments:

This car is really good overall despite the parts that went, or are on their way out.

The car has always started strong.

Its acceleration isn't the best.

4WD option is great for snow.

Oil light flashing at idle is early indication of low oil pressure due to excessive bearing clearance or other internal engine wear, not dirty oil. Unusual for this to happen at such relatively low mileage.

Unfortunately it's not going to get any better without internal engine repairs. You can use a heavier oil or an additive like STP to get better pressure, but as wear continues even that may not eliminate the symptoms.

Try a heavier oil, such as a 15w40 diesel engine oil. Yes, it's safe to use in a gasoline engine. Try that and see if it helps your low oil pressure situation.

1989 Toyota Corolla GT-S 4AGE from North America

Summary:

Great car for everyday use and a little fun on the side

Faults:

I have performed typical upkeep on the car.The water pump went bad. Replaced front axle boot due to tearing. Recaro style seat has worn and fenders and sunroof have rusted (been fixed).

General Comments:

This car is very reliable, and VERY fun to drive. The 7,200 RPM red-line and five speed make this car quick off the line and always has power on tap for the downshift. Handles very well, though could be a little tighter. This could easily be achieved through some tuning changes. Summer car is an 86 MR2 with same engine. If you don't need a lot of space I recomend the MR2. Mid engine, rear wheel drive, and much tighter.

If you can get a GT-S with a good body: go for it!

Electrical problem causing alternator to be replaced 4 times.

Ignition coil has been replaced twice.

Rear brakes (drums) seized up and were replaced.

General Comments:

Excellent performance: handles incredibly well in corners and is very fast!

Car is great on gas; you can get around 500+ kilometers per tank.

Other than the few problems listed, the car has been extremely reliable.

1989 Toyota Corolla SR5 4AFE 1.6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Surprising package

Faults:

The fan doesn't work on first speed.

CV's are making a bit of noise when cold.

Dash has 2 cracks, otherwise fine.

Everything else is in perfect condition...

General Comments:

The thing that pleases most with this car is the traction and handling provided by the constant 4wd, especially when living in wet Melbourne with numerous slippery tram tracks to cross.

It is very comfortable car, even with 4 adults, and performance doesn't suffer too much when loaded. Though it is nothing to get excited about, it is easy to beat more powerful cars at the light's in the wet especially.

At cruising speeds, it is very quiet and refined, and can be responsive at all speeds in the appropriate gear. The handling is quite suprising for this type of car, from parking to twisty mountain roads this car inspires confidence -especially in the wet.

Another major advantage of this car was realised when I moved house recently. The interior space is very practical, and has made for a surprisingly comfortable bed... even for two!
