1991 Toyota Corolla LS 1.6L DOHC from North America

Summary:

Best value for the money. A very nice and extremely reliable car. You just can't go wrong with it!

Faults:

Replaced shocks and struts at 2400000km which is not bad at all if you consider the road conditions in Manitoba.

Did some rust removal (a very common problem on older Corollas)

General Comments:

I had a Corolla for 2 years and I really loved it. Its definitely the best car in its class. It looks nice and drives even better. The interior is very well made, roomy and very comfortable. No rattling noises anywhere. The engine is very strong for its size (with manual transmission) but still very economical. It doesn't have the best handling (not nearly), but its by all means not a sports car, and that's what you should keep in mind. The power steering is light and feels very good. The best thing about the Corolla is it's reliability. A Corolla will last forever if you maintain it correctly. I would've probably never sold it if I hadn't crashed it.

Now that's obviously an opinion comment, but personally I find the older corolla handles beautifully... easy to handle in all weather conditions.

1991 Toyota Corolla XL 1.3 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Cheap to run, fun to drive

Faults:

I had a reasonably major accident in 1997. The car was hit on a perpendicular angle in the front left (passenger side) by a larger car (Holden Commodore) at 50 km. My car was extensively damaged - engine shunted, panels crushed whilst the other car was reasonably OK. This demonstrated the liability of this car in major accidents - these are not the sturdiest cars in the world.

General Comments:

This was a great little car. I had no mechanical problems in the years that I owned it and all that needed replacing (apart from tyres etc) was a water pump, after 200 000 km. This was also cheap due to the predominance of Toyota's. The engine was very economical, and even reasonably quick when pushed. The acceleration was particularly good for a normally aspirated 1.3 L engine.

I found the interior to be well designed and roomy for such a small car. The hatchback boot could also hold a surprising amount of gear. The electrics in this car were infallible and small interior lights were well placed.

I thought that the front of this car looked good; a little timeless and reasonably sporty for a 1.3 L runaround. The rear of the car is bulbous and ugly though.

This car would suit anyone looking for a economic, reliable car with a little speed for a reasonable price.

1991 Toyota Corolla DX 1.6 liter from North America

Summary:

The best car we've bought for under $1000

Faults:

The radiator had to get replaced.

The timing belt had to be replaced at 220,000 miles.

The air conditioning was not functional when I acquired the car. (bad compressor)

General Comments:

This car is very reliable and great fun to drive. It is my first car and, with an added CD player, it's great fun.

I also have a manual transmission, so, though it does accelerate slowly in first and second gear, the car performs well. If needed, and with intelligent shifting, it can still accelerate very quickly for it's power class.

We bought this car for $800, which was a great bargain. It appears to still be performing well, and the gas mileage is great.

1991 Toyota Corolla GL 1.6 16v from Turkey

Summary:

Reliable, comfortable and simple

Faults:

Except a leak in the trunk nothing much bad about this car yet.

General Comments:

This is a Corolla GL with automatic transmission/AC and with automatic windows/door locks etc.

It handles pretty nicely and thanks to the automatic transmission it is pretty comfortable in the city, especially if you are driving in Turkey :)

However it is not pretty much efficient on the road since it is not too skimpy on the gas consumption.

One thing I can say about this car is it is reliable.

If you are wondering why I would think again buying it again, I think there may be cars out there with more gadgets (even a simple cup holder would do) for better price.
