2000 Toyota Corolla Ascent 1.8L from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Excellent reliable car for a good price

Faults:

Tape player is temperamental, and wheel alignment was a bit troublesome, but no big issues.

General Comments:

This is a fantastic little car. Very responsive at the lower speed ranges, strains a bit more at the higher speeds if going up hills, but still performs beautifully - totally hoonable, which was unexpected.

Interior finish is a bit plasticky, especially compared to more European styled models such as the Holden Astra (main competitor in this range I believe), but it beats the pants off the Astra in reliability.

Fuel efficiency is good - particularly with premium petrol.

Downsides - hatchback boot takes a fair slam to catch properly. Fuel gage is not very accurate. Ride can be a little bumpy, but I guess normal for a smallish car.

2000 Toyota Corolla CE 1.8 V4 from North America

Summary:

As reliable as reliable can get

Faults:

The car needed alignment soon after I got it. Dealer did it without any problem at no cost.

General Comments:

The car is surprisingly quick for its engine. However, the greatest thing about this car is its reliability. It has always started, and I have never had to do anything special to it. I had bought extra warranty on it, but have not had to use it as of yet.

2000 Toyota Corolla 1.9 from North America

Summary:

The first and last Toyota I will ever own

Faults:

An easier question would be what hasn't gone wrong with this car? For the first few months, it did fine then the problems started. The power windows on the driver side worked when they felt like it. Cruise control fails when taking long trips. I have had the brakes replaced 3 times since buying the car. The steering wheel rattles whenever I get over 50 MPH. The car has no power at all. The shock absorbers were replaced last year and need replaced again. Of course every time I take it in, the dealership says it must be something I did because Toyota's are such great cars.

General Comments:

I bought this car because for years I had heard how reliable Toyota was. I think from now on, I am going to stick with my American cars. My 1988 Ford Escort was old and ugly and had a lot of miles on it, but it never let me down the way this car has and the dealership is rude and condescending to me every time I go there.

I cannot get rid of this lemon fast enough.

Cruise control? Power windows? You want a reliable Toyota? Don't try to turn it into a Mercedes Benz.

Having the problems you mentioned and only 46,000 miles? I agree that that is unacceptable, especially for a great reputation Toyota receives. What is this world coming to? You can't even drive a Toyota for 50,000 miles anymore without problems? What a shame. My Volvo has over 200,000 miles and the power windows still work.

2000 Toyota Corolla Ascent 1.8 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

The best car in the world?

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this car.

General Comments:

This is our family's third car. We also have a high performance sports car and a luxury car as well. But guess what? The Corolla as boring as it seems is the best of the lot! It has great build quality. It reliably gets you from A to B in quiet calm and refinement. The late model "luxury car" we own is (gasp!) noisier and spends way too much time in the garage!. The Corolla's performance is enough to get you easily booked for speeding yet it does not attract attention to itself like the performance car. It also rides better and seats a family of five. The Corolla is far more economical than the other two vehicles and doesn't demand special PULP fuel. You can park it into spaces which the luxury car can only dream about without worrying about vandals or the occasional parking dingle. Our previous everyday car (Daihatsu) had some similar qualities, but was way too tinny to compare. The Corolla must clearly be the best car in the world. Perhaps we should sell the other two cars?

Yes. STILL the best car in the world!

For all the reasons you state.

Very easy to maintain also, except for the occasional timing belt change, which I don't do myself.

If you're referring to the 2000 Corolla on review, it doesn't use a timing belt. Corolla engines started using chains from 1998 and beyond.
