2002 Toyota Corolla T-Sport 1.8 from Romania

Summary:

Perfect for me

Faults:

Nothing so far.

Just a bang when I start and drive. Read about it and it seems it's from ABS although is nothing serious.

I have to replace the rocker bolts (known as "lift" bolts) as preventive action (these can break and go in oil bay). According to Toyota they need replacement after 100.000 km (there is a TSB for this). There are 2 bolts and the cost is less than 1 Eur / piece.

General Comments:

Sure, it's loud, but after all it's a sports car (noisy just above 140kmh when it has 4.000 rpm in 6th gear).

Seats are excellent. Plenty of comfort for long distances and very good side support.

Dashboard is very ergonomic and everything is at hand.

Handling is very good, but there is a bit of body roll. Lowering the springs and installing a stiff bar will improve that a lot.

They could have installed an MP3 player, but it's just a CD player.

You have to rev it to get the thrill. After 6.200 rpm you have a smile on your face.

Acceleration is very good for this price. Yamaha engine is more like a bike engine so, high revs.

I've changed the lock pins at Toyota service and they told me they noticed that the 2 lobes from intake camshaft are worn. I've checked and they were quite worn. I've changed the camshaft, Toyota covered 50% of the part price. Also they gave me warranty 6 months for the work and 2 years for the part. The car had 107.000 km. Now it has 110.000 km and no problems. Anyway I'm gonna go again for a check-up.

2002 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6 from Israel

Summary:

Best small family saloon I have ever owned

Faults:

Brakes, they need renewing at almost every service, maybe because it's an automatic with discs front and rear.

I bought this car because of it's reliability, and so far so good.

No rattles or squeaks, in fact the car looks, feels and drives just like it did when it was brand new.

General Comments:

Definitely the best most reliable car I have ever owned (I have been driving for 40 years).

Unlike my previous Renault Megane, the engine is very quiet. The seats are comfortable over long motorway trips. I really enjoy driving this car.

The road-holding is excellent, and the performance is quite reasonable for a 1600 saloon, but it could do with a bit more punch when overtaking.

2002 Toyota Corolla LE Gas 2.4L from North America

Summary:

It is a very dependable and reliable car that does what the manufacturer claims

Faults:

No trouble at all except I hear some strange noises from under the hood when the engine and/or the weather is cold outside. the dealer checked it three times and nothing was found. I think it's something to do with how the radiator is mounted, when I apply pressure to the radiator the noise stops, when I release, the noise comes back. very strange. the car runs great otherwise. I had to replace the front brake pads at 22K miles, cannot understand why, unless I have been riding the brakes??

General Comments:

Runs like a dream, very smooth, quiet, ice cold a/c, has remarkable acceleration for a small car. can cruise on the interstates at 75-80 mph with no trouble.

2002 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.6 from Israel

Summary:

Truly, a great small family car

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong.

Faulty radio antenna base, replaced under warranty.

Broken compartment lid in the central consol, replaced under warranty.

My only gripe is that the brakes wear out quickly (discs front and rear), and have to be replaced quite often.

General Comments:

I have owned or driven dozens of cars over the past 40 years, all of them European (mostly British & French with a couple of Fiats thrown in). Mostly were quite comfortable, but very few of them could be noted for their reliability, and I was quite used to visiting the garage between services to have various faults repaired.

A friend persuaded me to purchase the Toyota Corolla Gli saloon (he was on his third). What a revelation! quiet, comfortable, roomy, reasonable road holding, and above all reliable.

This Corolla was designed in France and built in Turkey, so I suppose you could call it European.

Great build quality, no rattles, well finished.

Excellent road holding, good acceleration, and reasonable petrol consumption.

Good spec. it came with all the usual electrics, climate control, and a good quality single CD player.

In all, this is the best small family car I have ever owned.
