2020 Toyota Corolla Altis Premium Hybrid 1.8 hybrid from Brazil

Summary:

Underpowered

Faults:

Infotainment system malfunction at 8,048 km.

Front wheel bearings replaced at 12,072 kilometres.

Both problems were fixed under warranty.

Dealer was very friendly when I purchased the car, but they needed a month to replace the infotainment system and that meant I had to drive around with a dead screen perched on the dashboard and no reverse camera for a month.

In their defense, though, logistics were quite affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and must be even worse now with the semiconductor shortage.

General Comments:

I wasn't expecting to be fast, but this thing is dangerously slow. It's a heavy car and the 1.8 is badly underpowered for it. You go for an overtake and the car struggles to gain speed. Very annoying! Dangerous even... Toyota should have used the 2.0 hybrid from the Lexus UX 250h instead of the same old tired 1.8 from the Prius.

So what about the fuel economy you ask? This is a hybrid after all and the answer to that is... 21 km per litre or 50 MPG (U.S) is easily achievable even if you drive with the AC on most of the time. Great. The problem is that the performance is so bad that honestly, I would rather trade some 5 MPG less for a little more agility.

My old 2018 Corolla XEi 2.0 was a much better car.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No
