2001 Toyota Echo 1.3 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Reliable

Faults:

Engine light came on at 28000km VVTi fault. Car did not break down.

General Comments:

Good little car, reliable.

Bit on the tinny side, engine can be noisy when pushed.

Fit and finish is good, easy to park.

Standard sound system is shocking!

Has plenty of zip.

2001 Toyota Echo 1.5L from North America

Summary:

215,000 Miles and Still Runs Great!

Faults:

Left front wheel bearing replaced at 32,000 miles.

Rubber gaskets around two fenders have started to come loose at around 200,000 miles.

General Comments:

I bought this car new in April 2001 and put over 215,000 miles on it. Other than routine service, I have only had it in the shop once for a wheel bearing.

Gas mileage is 40-43 MPG with the 5-speed manual.

It is fun to drive and easy to park.

The seats are comfortable even on longer drives and the interior is roomy for a compact car.

Cross winds are definitely noticeable, but what can you expect with a 2,000 pound car with a relatively high-profile from the side.

I can pass cars with little trouble when necessary. It's not a racer, but that's not why you buy this car.

Air conditioning works great and interior noise levels are OK, but not excellent.

I'm sad they have decided to discontinue production of this car. I would definitely buy another when this one finally wears out.

2001 Toyota Echo from North America

Summary:

I could never replace this car, there is nothing better

Faults:

Hail storm damage shattered the windows and dented my car.

General Comments:

My little echo survived the worst hail storm anyone has ever seen!

It happened one evening in October, giant tennis ball sized hail rained down on my town and shattered the windowed of every car around and dented many so badly that they had to be totaled. Even after my car was confirmed as totaled, I still got offers to buy it. Instead I kept the poor little thing and replaced all that I could so that it would drive again. I don't care what other cars are out there I wanted my Toyota! I could never replace it; I had it for three years with no problems. I looked, but could not find a better car and now with the gas prices on the rise my little blue echo is even better then ever! I could have bought bran new 2004 Chevy for the same price it cost to fix my car, but I'd rather drive my dimpled 2001 Toyota echo.

Why didn't you just replace it with another ECHO?

As someone who hails from Canada, I would echo the above question.

I think one of those hail balls got the driver!!

4th Apr 2006, 01:42

I'd replace mine with the new Yaris.

I had a 2001 Toyota Echo with 14500 not a problem it got hit, so it was total, I just had it replaced with a used 2001 VW beetle, after reading other people comments I will give that bug two months and see, only has 75000 hope to get 15000 with no problems, will see, otherwise I will sell it and get a 2008 Toyota Yaris.

2001 Toyota Echo from Saudi Arabia

Summary:

Love to drive it, but sometimes I need more power

Faults:

Seat-belt of the seat beside the driver is staked.

Once, there was a major fire on the wires they are connected with the dynamo.

At strong hard brakes, the direction of the front tires is not controllable although the steering is stable.

Now, the car is 3 years old, I feel it is not economic anymore in fuel consuming.

There is no indicator for the engine temperature! Only red signal when it's REALLY HOT! That makes me always worried because we are in hot country.

General Comments:

It is satisfying for the driver, but not the passengers in comfort. And it accelerates wonderfully when the driver is the only one in the car. That's why I think it's the best choice for the person who rarely has other passengers in the car.
