1991 Toyota MasterAce Surf 2.0 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good budget MPV alternative

Faults:

Bought with an electrical fault as the starter was sticking. Sourced a second hand unit and replaced battery terminals.

Middle sliding door roller worn out, home made replacement done.

Power steering drive belt has recently become loose.

General Comments:

Very reliable 2.0 turbo diesel engine bolted to a usable automatic box with plenty of gears plus overdrive. Not a race winner, but a reliable plodder averaging around 40mpg on runs.

Large comfy cabin with good sized seats, good quality carpets and curtains fitted. Mine has the 6 sunroofs, 2 being removable.

Steering van like, and suspension sloppy and bouncy under load.

1985 Toyota MasterAce Surf (4WD) 2.0 turbo diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Practical, reliable, economical - a road mate!

Faults:

- Glow plugs gone around 180.000.

- Diesel pump needed replacement at around 200.000km.

- Radiator 75% blockage around 220.000km.

- Fuel gage works funny: Full tank shows as empty and then from half tank down shows correctly.

- Rust built up a bit (OZ lifestyle to blame I guess)

- Increasing oil leak since a while now, have to check that soon...

General Comments:

Well, I did 270.000 km in 6 years on this van and it never - not once! - let down.

Very economic engine, between 9 and 10lt per 100km.

Not the fastest thing out there but suits well the Australian speed limits - max speeds here are 110km/h.

7 seats: all seats fold creating a huge horizontal area. Seats come off very easy too. Plenty of room for a small van.

High and Low 4wd ranges. Not a "real" 4wd because it lacks the clearance but otherwise very good on sandy patches where a 2wd van just gets stuck.

How much did the diesel fuel pump repair cost?

1993 Toyota MasterAce Estima from Australia and New Zealand

Faults:

Poor fuel economy. Many of the optional extras proved to be a joke.

General Comments:

As a people mover, this model served as the prototype for better examples that followed.

1990 Toyota MasterAce Royal lounge 2.0 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very good buy at present prices

Faults:

Exhaust manifold cracked.

Climate control has packed up.

General Comments:

Once you realize it is a van it handles well and like most vans better with a load on. Passengers have been happy with the rear seats, although there have been comments on the leg room being more suited to shorter people. Two up with the dog and luggage we have spent three holidays in France.

The roof vents are good and the air con has been a bonus this past summer.

1991 Toyota MasterAce Surf 2.0 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good budget priced MPV

Faults:

Rear wheel bearing became noisy - easily and cheaply replaced.

Engine kept overheating, thank God the vehicle was still in its warranty from the selling garage. Replaced every part of cooling system but the problem was still there. Eventually had the head skimmed and it has been fine since then.

General Comments:

30 miles per gallon.

Comfortable.

Superb heating/air conditioning.

Excellent suspension system.

1st class all round people carrier.

I have the same problem on over heating of the engine. Could any one advise on where to buy a work shop manual for Master Ace Surf or who to contact for this problem.

Thank you.
