1989 Toyota Pickup DX 22 RE from North America

Summary:

Great economy and reliability all in one

Faults:

After 183,000 miles, the 22RE FINALLY gave up, which I understand is a bit premature. The rest of the drive train is perfect!

General Comments:

For economy and reliability, Toyota is the best. So much so, that I could not afford not to replace the engine. With the new engine, it's like having a new pickup again.

As far as 4x4 pickups go, this thing is as close to my 1972 CJ5 as any pickup out there.

1989 Toyota Pickup SR5 2.4 i-4 from North America

Summary:

A reliable great looking truck

Faults:

Very minor body rust, this is to be expected with toyotas, it still runs like brand new.

General Comments:

This has to be the most reliable truck on the road. It has a decent amount of power to it and it does great in the snow when put in 4wd. It gets me to where I have to go and it has gotten me quickly and safely to calls being a firefighter.

1989 Toyota Pickup SR5 extended cab 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

I love this truck

Faults:

Had to have rear replaced at 186000 miles.

Second replacement starter at 185000 miles.

Front seals replaced at 182000 miles.

Timing belt replaced at 220000 miles.

Clutch replaced at about 140000 miles.

General Comments:

This is by far the best, most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The V6 engine is quick and relatively quiet. Not much seating room in the extracab, but perfect for a big dog.

The engine is still strong at 186,500 miles. Amazing!

1989 Toyota Pickup V6 3.0L EFI from North America

Summary:

Fun, reliable truck

Faults:

November 2002 - Burnt out clutch, replaced original disc and pressure plate.

Christmas 2002 - FIRE!! Small electrical problem. Blew every fuse known to man, but easy fix.

January 2003 - Key ignition hole seems to be getting loose.

January 2003 - Brakes failed. Hit a snowplow.

New opinion: This truck is great if you don't live in Canada.

General Comments:

Awesome all-around vehicle. Plenty of passing power, but the engine seems to kick out at about 175 km/h. Light little truck, hard to get around in snow, but easy to dig out of snowbanks.

1989 Toyota Pickup SR5 3VZE 3.0L V6 from North America

Summary:

Excellent reliable daily driver, off-road or work truck!

Faults:

From most recent to least recent:

December 2002 - Rode my clutch into oblivion. Replaced clutch and pressure plate.

July 2002 - Brakes finally gave out, replaced faulty brake rotors.

July 2000 - Exhaust started making excessive noise due to corrosion. Replaced muffler.

August 1999 - Previous owner (my dad) removed a rusty roll bar.

Minor rust areas have started to show up due to the fact that I live in Iowa which is Hell on cars rust-wise. The truck used to live in Colorado where surface rust is not a problem, and so far it has been holding up well with regular cleanings. Car has 70k miles on it (low miles for an '89) and I expect it to last much longer.

General Comments:

Very small cab, but took me not very long to get used to. Shifting is a little difficult in cold weather. 0-60 speed is slower than desired, but it climbs to 40 with no problem. Handles well with a load (or without). A great truck, none more reliable!
