1988 Toyota Supra Turbo 3.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A dream

Faults:

Head gasket and the usual stuff repaired before my purchase a couple of years ago. The car has been faultless in my ownership. Do your research before buying one of these, detailed history is a must!

General Comments:

Well since paying Gran Turismo in the 1990's I have always loved this car.

Metallic black, 1988 Supra. Iconic.

Very fun to drive and fast. Maybe not fast by today's standards, but it goes as quick as I need it to, but I just like to cruise in it, the car is mint and I want to keep it that way!

Very cool 1980's looks.

Dated interior, but surprisingly comfortable and refined.

Wouldn't say the manual transmission was rare, but most were automatics when I was looking, glad I held out for a manual - just more fun to drive.

My dream car, what more can I say, I love it! If you are reading this, you probably know all about the Supra. If you are thinking of buying, as mentioned, do your homework and do not buy accident damaged examples!

1988 Toyota Supra Turbo turbo from North America

Summary:

Keeping this car forever, don't care how much it costs

Faults:

Head gasket at 68500k. Not sure how bad, if the head is warped or the cylinder is cracked.

General Comments:

Car is quick once the turbo spools at around 2500 RPM. It has a slow takeoff if the turbo isn't spooled when accelerating from a dig.

The seats are very comfortable.

The car looks amazing; diamond white targa, 69k, all original. The car had been garaged, and I'm the 2nd owner. The body and paint is seriously as good as a car from 2005.

The car handles and hugs the road excellently. The suspension is stiff, but that's what you want; it feels like your car is one with the street.

I just love the way the car looks. It's so unique and distinctive, and doesn't look like a plain old Toyota.

1988 Toyota Supra Turbo 3.0 turbo from North America

Summary:

Probably the best high performance car available under $2000

Faults:

Bought with blown head gasket.

Bought a JDM engine with blown head gasket.

Replaced the radiator, misc hoses

Blown head gasket after 35000 miles

Two of the three blown head gaskets are believed to be the fault of the garage that I sent it to.

General Comments:

Very fast car. Reliable when it doesn't have a blown head gasket. Very good handling in corners. Targa top is very cool during summer.

I know this is an older review, but head gaskets are a well known common fault in this car. Toyota recommended different torque on the head bolts in later years which seemed to have stopped the issue. You and other Supra owners might find this link helpful - http://www.supras.org.nz/techinfo/bhg.htm

An older site and there is probably better/more updated info about this on the internet by now, but the basics are there.

Anyways the 88 Supra is still an iconic car (mostly thanks to games like Gran Turismo), enjoy it anyone who has one!

1988 Toyota Supra 3.0 i6 7m-ge from North America

Summary:

It is the single greatest creation that Toyota has ever birthed

Faults:

The first engine (7mge) blew at 196000 miles, Head gaskets blew, needed new rotors. Center console cover has started to wear fairly bad, to faded blue.

General Comments:

This car is fast. It handles like a dream. New engine has 90000 miles on it and couple hundred thousand to go.

The interior is awesome in every way and the seats are the most comfortable of any car I've ever been in.

The outside of the car is quick and sporty looking. It will demand attention where ever it goes.

1988 Toyota Supra Turbo-A 7M-GTEU from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Absolutely crazy and awesome

Faults:

The car broke the bottom end. Mechanic didn't check the oil, not the cars fault.

General Comments:

This baby was (and will be again one day) putting out 360BHP @ 0.8 bar running a T78 on the stock 7M-GTE. It was incredible to drive, nothing I've been in even comes close. Full grey leather interior and leather seats, electric windows and a good sound system (that I've never used, as it would interrupt the sound of the engine).
