2000 Toyota Tundra SR5 V8 from North America

Summary:

I really love my truck!

Faults:

Only problem was the left exhaust header had cracked at three of the welds. I should have replaced before 80,000 but didn't. Would have been under warranty.

General Comments:

I have been reading about your brake problems. I have never had one. I had even used the brakes during a "rally". The brakes faded three times under EXTREMELY hard braking with little to no cool down. I was not surprised. It was being driven too hard. I have been using the Bendix Silvers for pad and replaced them three times in all of its life. Yes, used them hard; wet, dirt, snow, salt.

I had done this because PA state inspection is very strict on disc/rotor wear. Heck, I barely passed last year. Yet, per the shop manual, there is still plenty of life left. Maybe Toyota has too long of a wear life on the rotors? I am going for the slotted rotors now, just for kicks. Overall, never had a problem.

Except for the exhaust header. Courtesy of EBay, was able to pick one up cheap and had my mechanic replace it.

2000 Toyota Tundra sr5 V8 from North America

Summary:

Good truck, but company no longer stands alone

Faults:

I have had continuous front brake problems including shake and shimmy. I have had the rotors turned twice and am way overdue on new rotors (Very soon). This problem has happened since I bought the truck (shake/shimmy).

Two O2 sensors went on me (not same time)

The truck v8 works great, but now has a "tappet" noise. The mechanic stated that's normal... it does stop after a minute or two. I was told the its because the tappets are shimmed rather than nut adjusted, but it sounds horrible (like an old cheap car bought when I was a kid.

Lost my drive led light (indicates in drive) Way too expensive to fix. I know I'm in drive because its the one not lit.

General Comments:

This is my seventh Toyota. I was always brand loyal to them to the point of not even looking at other vehicles, just buying a Toyota. I have in total about a million miles driven on Toyotas. This has generally been a good vehicle to me except for mentioned things. I can always depend on just getting in and going...always. However this truck has had more problems than all the others together and has pushed my loyalty to the point where I will look elsewhere. The most different change in my years and years of owning toyota vehicles is the backing of the vehicle itself when problems arise. Problems used to be taken care of without hesitation and those days are gone and possible so am I. Foolish move by a great company to test their loyal customers.

Its refreshing to read an actual review on the Tundra.

You are definitely not alone in having problems with both your brakes and transmission. It appears Toyota has totally lost it when it comes to both quality and customer service. My family has had one Toyota. It WON'T have another one.

2000 Toyota Tundra Limited 4.7L from North America

Summary:

Great truck with a few bad parts

Faults:

Exhaust headers cracked.

Transmission (over drive gear)

2 Ignition Coils went bad.

General Comments:

I really enjoy my truck in ways of looks and drive.

I hate having to replace a transmission!

There have been too many problems with it for only having it 50K miles!

Other than that, I love the way the truck is layed out. I can't wait for the 5.7L Tundra. That is the only thing that might make me buy another Tundra.

Reviews for American cars with your problems typically end with: “I will never buy another (Ford, GM, or Chrysler) car again.”
