What on earth does a 80's GM or Ford have to do with a 2002 or new full size truck comparison?

12th Feb 2007, 05:27

22:20; Yes, you've definitely proven that domestics have us beaten by showing how Fords and Chevy's break down in under 50,000 miles. Guess what? I once owned a Tercel that I did no maintenance on when I was 18 (not as a test, just because I didn't care), I put about 60,000 miles on it before I sold it, and it ran perfectly. So you've actually reaffirmed what I already know; under stress, a Ford and Chevy will break down, and a Toyota will keep running.

12th Feb 2007, 07:11

It has nothing to do with the comparison, just yet another humble person defying the Toyota freak's ranting about how crappy the domestic trucks are and have been since the 80's, blah blah blah.

12th Feb 2007, 07:23

If you would read the comment correctly, the Ford and Chevy had over 255,000 miles and the two guys are trying to drive them without doing any maintenance to see which one breaks down. They have put over 40,000 miles beyond 255,000 miles with no maintenance. That's a good thing. Quit twisting the argument to make a point.

I have a 2004 Silverado with 87,000 miles. Oil changes/filters and tire replacements only. The newer domestics are great. My last 2 imports after the 2000 model year were not... the engines could not withstand the high mileage mostly highway that I drive every day. And my last Acura went through 2 trans.

12th Feb 2007, 09:31

And if you read the Tercel comment clearly, you would see that poster did the same thing with a Toyota and it proved more reliable.

05:27

What? Your comment made no sense. How many original miles were on the car? How much hauling did you do with it? Did you pull trees out of the ground with it? Did you trash it constantly up in the hills, burnouts, 4x4'ing, etc, all the stuff that a real truck is used for? I bet not.

Like the previous commenter said, quit twisting posts however you seem fit.

12th Feb 2007, 10:45

Yes, that's exactly right; I bought a Tercel to pull trees out of the ground with. That was a joke. Actually, I did dump the clutch in it a lot, and I had it offroad in a lot of places that some guys wouldn't have the guts to take a 4 wheel drive truck.

The point is, a contest between two guys with Fords and Chevy's should (call me crazy) maybe be posted on a Ford or Chevy thread? Makes sense to me. Now that's a good example of twisting a comment around; how do we keep getting on the subject of vehicles other than Toyota's here?

12th Feb 2007, 11:14

Don't bring in a tercel in this truck argument please. That just doesn't make sense. Go cause trouble elsewhere.

12th Feb 2007, 11:33

Tercel is not a full size truck... however Tundras, Silverados, F Serie, Titans, Rams etc might have some useful tidbits.

12th Feb 2007, 15:59

To 11:14, this isn't a "truck argument". It's a review of a Tundra, and comments that are supposed to be about a Tundra. At least a Tercel is a Toyota, which is what this site is about. I'm closer to being on topic than you are. YOU can go elsewhere.

12th Feb 2007, 16:35

8:28.......... and brakes which I meaunt to mention... a new sound system, rims, bed liner which have nothing mechanically just upgrades. Highly recommend this late model truck!

12th Feb 2007, 16:45

With regard to the "no maintenance challenge" (described in comment 22:20, I was reminded of a "no maintenance" situation from some years back. A friend of ours had a grown, single daughter who bought a BRAND NEW 1975 Ford Grand Torino in 1975. She knew NOTHING about cars, and neither did her dad. At 54,000 miles the car started knocking, overheated and died. It turned out that the woman HAD NEVER OPENED THE HOOD in that 54,000 miles. She had NO IDEA she was supposed to take it in for regular service!! The engine finally just ran out of oil and FRIED. I could not imagine ANY car going 54,000 miles without ever having the hood opened!! I'm surprised the original battery held up that long.

13th Feb 2007, 12:18

Did the woman with the Torino complain loud & often that the manufacturer wouldn't give her a new engine under the warranty? Perhaps she's one of those disgruntled Saab owners I keep seeing pop up on this site.

13th Feb 2007, 14:42

The reason why that comment was not posted elsewhere, in the Ford or Chevrolet section was made very clear. It was ANOTHER REAL-WORLD experience that, yet again, defies your ranting about horrid Domestic trucks! And you never answered my question, how many original miles were on the car when you bought it? And you took the car off-road in places that some people wouldn't have the guts to take their 4-WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK? Oh, so youre telling me, that you took it through HUGE mud holes that would go up to the headlights of that Tercel, with only 2-wheel drive and made it out fine? So, you took it on the beach, yet again with only 2-wheel drive that would have, let me guess, buried the trucks? Either the drivers of those trucks were complete wussies and were afraid to get their trucks dirty, or youre just makin that up. I'm sorry for being so rude, but there is honestly no way a Tercel with not even a foot of ground clearance can beat a truck with 4-wheel drive and 1.2-2.6 feet of ground clearance, lockers all around, huge torque numbers, and bigger and beefier tires.

13th Feb 2007, 14:52

It is a truck argument now. With that new filter thing in place, the truck argument is now here, and the review-related comments stick with the review, although all of the comments to the review belong here. so, yes, now it is a truck argument.

13th Feb 2007, 15:22

OBVIOUSLY my little car could not go places that almost any truck would. My point was that I DID beat this car very badly, which had around 4000 miles on it when I bought it, somewhere between 60 and 63 thousand miles on it when I sold it (with the rims, rocker panels, and both bumpers chewed up and dented from trips through corn fields, quarries, and wooded areas). Having said that, I can't ever remember opening the hood on that car other than maybe to put windshield washer fluid in. I'm quite sure I never changed the oil. I put gas in it, beat it for about 60,000 miles, and sold it for a 4 wheel drive. It was running perfectly.

Now that that's out of the way, can we stick to the Tundra? A lot of positive Toyota reviews get infected by people that don't like them, are jealous of them, and instead, want to talk about their junk domestic vehicles. You couldn't GIVE me any 2 brand new Ford trucks and $1000 to give up my Toyota truck, which is how ALL Toyota owners that I have encountered feel about their cars and trucks. So why mention Fords and Chevy's here? No one cares.

13th Feb 2007, 17:40

GIven the MAJORITY of trucks on the road today do 95% of what the Tercel can do (grocery getting, commuting, etc.) it's a valid comparison.

These fantasies about driving across the tundra (no pun intended) and slogging through swamps apply to 1% of truck owners, if that.

Oh, and I guarantee that these trucks aren't pulling trailers 100% of the time.
