I rebuild transmissions for a living over the last 14 years and I love Fords, GM and Dodge. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't eat. Please buy more! I need to add a few more bays for my shop.

22:11: Don't worry; with the Big 3 churning out all the ridiculous trash they make today, trying to keep their heads above water (and failing), you'll have plenty more transmissions to rebuild. Even with the companies falling apart, people still buy the stuff!

My friend owns a transmission shop and says otherwise. He advised me to buy a new GM Silverado truck with the 100,000 mile mechanical warranty instead of Toyota. He also owns new domestic trucks.
8th Mar 2007, 07:48
I went with the Motor Trend and North American Truck of the year a 2007 Silverado. Drive a Tundra and then drive a Silverado. No comparison.... went with the Silverado on the spot.

Hey 22:11
Maybe your the one that rebuilt my transmission a few weeks ago. I bought a Ford thinking that I wouldn't have to worry about my transmission (4r70w) going. How wrong I was. I stayed away from Chevy just because I drove them before and knew that would have to rebuild at least once before 100k.
8th Mar 2007, 09:22
06:23; So you just happened to read the mechanic's very recent comment here, and just happened to have a friend who also rebuilds transmissions, and you just happened to be discussing Toyota transmissions versus Chevy or Ford ones since this mechanic's comment posted? And, of course, he says otherwise? Get real. Nice story there. He's telling you that he rebuilds mostly, if not ALL, Fords, GM's, and Dodge's. No amount of talk here changes those facts.

Well that's good then... GM warranty mechanical/100,000 miles on 2007. If it was a Toyota with the standard 36,000 mile warranty you would be stuck. I would never tow my 20 ft boat with a Tundra.
8th Mar 2007, 18:01
Yeah, try taking your broken down Silverado to the GM dealer and see if they honor the warranty. The more GM gets into financial trouble, the more they are going to tell their dealers to blame the customer for the problems (and therefore void the warranty).
9th Mar 2007, 05:18
I enjoy reading this nonsense and feel fortunate to own a new heavy duty full size domestic... its amazing how people fall into this Toyota hype. I would have to have my head examined to tow my boat with a Tundra... I would need more than a new trans.

Too funny. Yeah, better to have a car that looks better (even if it doesn't) than one that has quality. I'd rather have outdated styling than outdated driving characteristics. The Caliber is a great car, for 1995.
You'll have lots of time to look at your Caliber - at the dealership when it's in for yet another repair.
11th Mar 2007, 05:56
19:24 You must have meant to say that the Caliber WON'T outlast any Toyota ever made. By the way, Honda Fit just took the award for Best Small Car of the Year. The Caliber wasn't even mentioned; as nobody cares about it.
11th Mar 2007, 11:28
Wow, you must know "Miss Cleo" on the psychic hotline to make such amazing predictive statements about a car that hasn't even been out for a year. Have you applied your amazing powers of foresight to the stock market? Probably not, or you wouldn't be so enamored with low-class puddle jumpers like the Yaris.
11th Mar 2007, 11:58
Consumer Reports just said that the Caliber I believe... I am not positive... was a disappointing design release... I know they said the Sebring was a big disappointment... I actually feel sorry for Chrysler.
11th Mar 2007, 19:27
Ooh, Consumer Reports said...! Well gee, I guess I must conform to what their editors say. NOT! I have never agreed with anything that the "critics" have ever said, whether it was cars, movies, or books. I could give a cat's ass what Consumer Reports said. I think the Caliber is the best looking small car in years, and the Sebring is great looking. I feel sorry for zombies who are compelled to slavishly conform to what Consumer Reports dictates, rather than deciding for themselves what they like.
12th Mar 2007, 09:43
Nah, real drivers just test drive the cars themselves to see how mediocre they are in person.
Caliber and Sebring didn't disappoint - more low quality crap fawned on an ignorant buying public.
Can't wait for the Caliber SRT - a mediocre car that also has the added benefit of SUV gas mileage. There's a winner all around.

Just thought I'd make a point here. A friend of mine has an '06 Ram 1500. I have a '98 Tacoma that's never needed a repair. In my Tacoma, I've dropped my good friend off at the Dodge dealership TWICE for recalls on his Dodge (faulty airbags AND seatbelts simultaneously). I'll be dropping him off a THIRD time this week for a wheel bearing recall that he was just notified of. Apparently, they were put together improperly. Where's the quality control?
My point is, he's going to unload the Dodge asap and buy a Toyota. And his wife drives a Dodge Stratus, which is also getting traded; for a Camry.
12th Mar 2007, 13:09
One of my co-workers put 410,000 miles on a Chrysler. Not even the bodies of Toyotas or Hondas will last that long.
12th Mar 2007, 15:47
"My family just had a PT Cruiser for a rental car..."
Yeah, that clearly qualifies you to make statements about the Caliber, a car that you have never driven. Let's hear your opinion on the '58 DeSoto while you're at it, since it has just as much relevance.
12th Mar 2007, 19:03
To 11:28; How is that any different from YOUR "amazing predictive statement" that the Caliber is a good car? Must be the same reasoning that these wizards that predict the Ford Fusion's "projected reliability" are using, as opposed to the the actual historical reliability of an Accord or Camry for the last 25 or so years.
Anyone out there that is mechanically literate knows that Toyota and Honda is a class or two above the Aveo, Caliber, Focus, and every other Big 3 car. I don't care about who thinks that the Yaris is the ugliest car ever and the Caliber is the best looking. That's all opinion, but the Yaris is without a doubt the more mechanically solid car. And the Fit is even better than the Yaris.
This argument is ridiculous. There will be demand for Honda Fits for many, many years to come, just like a lot of Honda cars. The Caliber is nothing but a cheaply made, soon to be forgotten uninspiring car that will have a resale value of about 10 dollars after a few years.
13th Mar 2007, 07:43
Wow, more proof of why Chrysler is soon to be the biggest auto company in the world, opening up more and more plants in the United States than any other manufacturer.
Oh, wait, that's Toyota. Chrysler has a worth of ZERO according to analysts, and is going to be sold again this summer.
Guess your coworker got the only one that worked.
24th Feb 2007, 07:31
Toyota did say, UNLIKE THE DOMESTICS, that it was taking quality control seriously and would not simply churn out cars/trucks without ensuring they were quality built.
But the representative did NOT say that Toyota was trying to "match the standards of the domestics".
