1999 Toyota Yaris S 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Only £400 spent in six years (70k), amazing car

Faults:

Gearbox oil leak made the clutch slip at 50k. Had the clutch replaced at the same time for only £250.

Water pump went at 100k,; cost me £25 to replace in under 1/2 hour.

Replaced anti roll bar link bushes; cost me £12 and took an hour.

The radio was replaced as it was very poor.

The lack of power steering means the tyres have to be 1 or 2 psi over the recommended pressure.

General Comments:

This car replaced a 1995 BMW 3 Series that just cost me too much to run to work every day.

The Yaris has passed all five M.O.T's since I have bought it, and never failed to start or break down.

Just scrapping this car after it failed an MOT at 192,000 miles. The car has been driven hard for the last ten years and covered over 160,000 miles, but has never broken down or failed to start.

It just failed the MOT on a rear wheel bearing. So sad to see it go, can't imagine another car being as reliable.

Try a modern Avensis or Camry from Toyota for another reliable car; since you liked this car and had a 3-series before, you'll probably find the cars I mentioned a nice middle ground, and they should last if looked after.

If it's been so good, why scrap it for the sake of 1 wheel bearing which isn't expensive?

1999 Toyota Yaris Sol 1.0 petrol from Iceland

Summary:

Reliable city car

Faults:

Paint chips easily and rust is beginning to show in various places. Too early I think, compared with other cars I've had.

Horn stopped working, was really rusted, but I could fix it myself.

Been hearing some weird sound from the suspension in one back wheel.

Nothing else has gone wrong with the car, have only needed to replace brake pads once.

General Comments:

Great driving in the city, can park anywhere.

Great fuel economy.

Surprisingly roomy, can fit more stuff into it than my previous Corolla hatchback.

Handles surprisingly well in snow and ice.

Lacks power on highways and hills.

Bad road noise.

High seating makes you feel uneasy in sharp turns.

1999 Toyota Yaris VVT-i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Top-notch super-mini

Faults:

This car has been almost faultless as far as reliability is concerned, the only problem I've had with it was an electric window failure, though this was repaired very quickly for about £80 (parts and labour).

General Comments:

Overall, this is a wonderful car which is typically reliable for a Toyota.

It is also cheap to insure (considering I am a 19 year-old male!) and incredibly cheap on fuel (easily does 55mpg on the motorway, possibly more).

The car is very nippy off the mark, but once out of 2nd gear lacks any real poke and is awful on hills, but you can't expect miracles from such a tiny engine.

The only problem I tend to have with the car is that it gets a bit uncomfortable on long journeys, and every single bump is noticed. The clutch is also very light, something which is annoying at first, but you get used to it with time.

I absolutely agree with you!

I also have an Yaris (manufactured in 2004) and I'm satisfied. I also think the engine is a little underpowered, but I don't mind because it's quite economic. I also complain about the suspension because it is not as smooth as I expected. I like the very light and short clutch, every car should be like that.

1999 Toyota Yaris VVT-I 1.0 petrol standard from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent quality, reliable, cheap tax and miles, and comfortable

Faults:

Nothing till 3 months ago. Bracket on anti roll bar broke and sun visor spring broke.

Cost of replacements and local non Toyota fit were £45.

General Comments:

This model has all chrome finish, front electric windows, electric windows front, and rear seats are sliding, giving ample leg room in rear or more boot space.

5 door hatch, am a lady driver and careful. No accidents, and therefore no problems from anything except the 2 items listed.

I love this car and will now change for the new Yaris. The CD player and sound system is great, electric mirrors are a good feature, and I love the magnified speedo, giving the impression of huge 3d depth in front of the car.

Hey, just wondering if you have a 1999 T reg Yaris? I have had trouble with my fuel sender switch, as to where the cables hook on to 1-5? Two came out, and I can't figure it out, and it's starting to annoy me. If you can help, I would be grateful. Thank you..
