2004 Toyota Yaris Sol VVT 1.3 gasoline from Mexico

Summary:

The best hatchback

Faults:

All is good. Only some people said that the price to replace parts is expensive. I don't know yet.

General Comments:

The car is fast, comfortable, cool, and nice. You feel like you're in a big car, have good materials inside, and it looks great outside. YOU WILL BE ADDICTED TO DRIVING IT.

2004 Toyota Yaris T Spirit 1.4 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not as reliable as I had been led to believe

Faults:

A new gearbox bearing required at a cost of £600. Not exactly the Toyota reliability I was expecting, I do not consider 81,000 miles high enough mileage for a gearbox failure.

General Comments:

Handling not that great on corners. The cabin plastics feel cheap.

Good otherwise, until the gearbox issues I think I would have bought another. Now I am not so sure.

Can you explain in full what was wrong before you changed the bearing?

Thanks.

2004 Toyota Yaris Vitz 1300U-L 1.3 VVT-i 2SZ-FE from Japan

Summary:

Cheaply executed 'giant killer'

Faults:

Brake pads decreased at 35000km.

Brake disks decreased at 35000km.

Power steering has been becoming feel-less since 55000km.

Engine noise has become louder recently.

Fuel consumption has been getting worse.

General Comments:

I like this car, because of its spirited acceleration and engine power above average for this class. For example, it accelerates from 100km/h to 140km/h in 11.64sec (faster than VW New Beetle with 1984cc engine) and posts 0-100km/h in 11.3sec (as fast as the Ford Focus 2.0 with 145ps, and faster than the Citroen C5 2.0 with automatic transmission!). In fact I recorded maximum speed of 190.68km/h with its limiter kicked in, and on chassis dyno it records 191km/h with some space left, so its potential maximum speed is close to 200km/h (well above manufacturer data of 165km/h!).

In such sense, it can be called as a "giant-killer", but things are not so simple.

Its build quality is not too high, especially the brake system has been rather fragile, as decrease of pads and discs. And the tone of AM/FM tuner is just lemon, frankly speaking! Power steering has been becoming feel-less since 60000km.

I'm afraid the car was made by part timers with little skill and training, owing to Toyota's business policy in those days. In early 2000s, Toyota's quality became worse and worse.

Now, Toyota has quit using part timers in its assembly lines, so reliability of Toyota vehicles would become better and better, and regain its legendary reputation, I do hope!

PS.

Its fuel consumption is 12km/l average now, rather worse than 16km/l average of before 65000km. It will be largely for CVT automatic transmission's fatigue.

2004 Toyota Yaris T-Sport 1.5 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Lovely, fun and reliable car, the best I have ever owned

Faults:

Four new tyres.

New brakes.

General Comments:

Very good road holding.

Comfortable.

Incredibly spacious inside, yet can park in the smallest of spaces.

Good looking car (mine is a three door model)

Light and nippy.

Reliable.

I have owned this car for two years and drive in both town and motorway, extensively. I don't particularly look after my cars well, yet this one just seems to go on and on.

The only negative comment I have is the turning circle, which isn't particularly good, however, I would expect this as it has a sporty suspension.

The four tyres, which were replaced, cost a mere £180, fitted!

2004 Toyota Yaris SOL 1.3 from Poland

Summary:

Low costs and ultra performance

Faults:

That was Toyota - everything was OK!

General Comments:

This is really car for singles. It performs great in the city, but you can also drive it on high way with no shame.

2004 Toyota Yaris Sol 1.4 D4D from Romania

Summary:

Great car

Faults:

Mirror heating stopped working after one year. Fixed on warranty.

General Comments:

Excellent car to drive both in the city and on the highway. It's stable, easy to drive and has a very good consumption (5.6l/100km in the city and around 4 outside).

The driving position is very good in the city (high) but not very comfortable for me (I'm tall) when driving outside the city for a long time.

The engine is quite powerful and it accelerates better than my previous VW Bora.

Overall - we are very satisfied with it.
