What does passing the emissions inspection have to do with a head touching the headliner?

So you would sign off on a car with no drivers seat as “suitable to operate” if you’re the inspector?

I guess it was about the emissions inspector seeing the front seat taken off and whether he would pass a vehicle which is likely not roadworthy without a driver's seat, regardless of the emissions.

Some US states require a yearly safety inspection along with an emissions test. Both performed at the same time. Most likely what the comment was referring to.

I'm sure the comment on 29 December was just joking. He didn't really mean the seat MUST have been taken out, rather just anyone over 6 foot might find the Yaris a bit cramped, if someone at 5'9" or 5"10" is struggling for room already.

I’m guessing people who end up in a Yaris don’t have comfort high up on the priority list. These economy cars are obviously cramped, but also tend to lack center arm rests, have no contour to the seats, no heated/cooled seats, no leather option, often manual seat controls, and other basic comfort shortcomings.

Comfort or any level of contemporary sophistication is not on the menu for the Yaris. Ditto for the Mitsubishi Mirage, which seems to be in a similar class. While I have no issue with not having leather (much, much prefer cloth), heating and cooling seats (modern day complication), manual seat adjustment (makes it faster to recline the seatback for a quick snooze), the one thing I hate is poorly-designed seats, which either fatigue you or give you a back ache in normal driving.

Could argue all car seats are uncomfortable on one level or another though, right? I think an average desk chair is more comfortable than 99% of car seats.

Not all car seats are uncomfortable. The most comfortable car seat that I ever sat and driven in was a 1985 LeSabre Limited with knit cloth. You'll never see new car seats as comfortable as that again. Even leather in a newer car isn't all that great.

Agreed with the desk chair. For car seats, I used to think so. First I thought that the "common man" cars like Toyota Corollas (well, a lot of Japanese cars which are not sports or extreme luxury versions like Lexus) were designed by a committee of dental chair makers. I even had Audis (the 80 and A4 sedans) that were plush and refined, but the seats were also mediocre (the 6-cylinder versions owned by friends had strangely more comfortable seats - which were not sports seats). When I bought my previous car, a used 2001 BMW 316ti (base hatchback), it didn't even have lumbar support adjustment and wasn't a sports seat, but back support was good, I could drive for hours without a backache. Fluke, I thought, but after 9 years I replaced it with another BMW (base trim) 320i 2009, again cloth trim, not sports seats, no lumbar adjustment, but the seats were spot-on again. To be fair, many newer cars now, even Japanese, have more supportive seating, but at a Suzuki showroom, I sat in I think a brand new Swift hatch and a Baleno, and their seats felt totally different from each other - both from the same maker, and roughly the same vehicle class.

By 1%, you mean you’d rather sit in your car seat than your favorite recliner or couch inside your house. Is that what you mean? I think car seats are generally very uncomfortable. I agree with that comment. The combination of armrests (including some cars with no armrests), hard plastic for the door armrest, weird contours in the foot wells, odd dimensions like the car seat being 3 inches narrower than it should be, etc leave me thinking they’re not actually that comfortable.

OK, so, first go back and read the comparison in 5:33 again. It said "an average desk chair is more comfortable than 99% of car seats". Nothing in there about recliners, which nobody uses as desk chairs, nor couches. Sorry that whatever vehicles you are stuck driving, with their weird foot well contours and insufficient seat space for wide backsides, are so uncomfortable, but fortunately they do not make up 99% of the cars available, not by a long shot.

Right, I’m sure that would help it pass the yearly emissions inspection if the inspectors saw that!
