1991 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 8v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Pile of rubbish

Faults:

Engine blew up after 15 miles of driving it. I was not driving it mad. Was just driving along then a big bang the clouds of smoke and oil.

General Comments:

This car looked fantastic when I picked it up.

When I got the car to a garage they found that a piston had shattered causing the engine to die. They informed me also that the car was rotten on the underside and should no have been on the road as it was a "death Trap".

The garage even took pity on me and didn't charge me for thier findings.

I contacted the guy that sold it to me and wanted nothing to do with it, so I lost out on £1000 after 15 miles of ownership.

So the car had to be scrapped.

You may well be entitled to your £1000 back, depending on the circumstances. Look into it.

I bought the car on Ebay which is something that I will never do again so I don't have a leg to stand on. I contacted ebay about this and they said that I should have taken a closer look at the car before I paid for it.

Also as I paid cash I could not even cancel a cheque.

1991 Vauxhall Calibra 8 VALVE 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Would buy one again, mean looking and sexy

Faults:

When first bought my car they made it look pretty by filling rear arches and spraying it over where work had been done. so within a few weeks rust was coming through, so first was rear arches done properly.

Brake discs and pads all round.

Alternator went.

Cutting out.

Steering problems.

Pulling to left, took 6 months to find fault!

Anti roll bar link.

Wishbone bushes and wishbones.

Usual extras like ht leads, spark plugs and tyres.

All this in the past 5 months of owning it.

General Comments:

Handling is not great, could be improved.

Really looks the business in my eyes, have put twin stainless steel exhausts on.

Bit squashed in back of car.

Comfy seats.

When I put my foot down it doesn't let me down.

Is not the fastest, but at least they shift, not bad for a 8 valve.

If these cars were looked after properly then great cars, but I have picked one with no history that I know of.

1991 Vauxhall Calibra 16v 2.0L 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A superbly crafted entry level sports car that scores high on style and value for money

Faults:

Substantial part of wiring loom burnt by faulty wiring - no fault of Vauxhall though - bad attempt by previous owner to wire in an immobiliser!

Absolutely nothing else though!

General Comments:

For budget, entry level sports cars, you cannot beat the Calibra.

I have had mine for about five months, and it accelerates with ease, handles OK, and stops very fast!!

Mechanically, there is no faulting the 2.0L 16v engine from Vauxhall. In the Calibra, the engine is capable of performing well under pressure, but the older Calibra's tend to scream a little when pushed.

Nonetheless, when you put your foot down, there is an amazing reponse, and the car feels extremely solid when driving. It has enormous presence on the road, and even after 10 years, it still looks very stylish.

Can become a little bit lairy when pushing it to the limits.

1991 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 16v (non Ecotec) from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very nice and sleek looking car!!! Still turns heads today if you look after them!!

Faults:

Seats wear easily.

Under floor rusting a MAJOR problem.

Engine ticks loud at cold start.

Rear discs failed 1 week after purchase.

ABS crap in the wet/snow.

Relays keep packing in, no knowledge where specific ones are eg. head lamp washers.

2 new wish-bones at the front (MOT failure).

Original speakers / radio crap, now got ALPINE kit, sounds really good.

Standard alarm useless, fitted CLIFFORD instead.

General Comments:

VERY fast!!! 140mph!!!

Nice and smooth ride (generally).

Exhaust (Magnex) sounds the business.

Car now 10 years old, does not show it!!!

Standard alloys look nice as it is!

Next car will be a V6 or 4x4 Turbo.

I own a 2.0 16v calibra 1991, it had a high idle problem (sticks on 2000 revs) a local vaux dealer quoted nearly £1000 to resolve the problem. It required a idle control valve (£241 fitted) and an air mass meter (£336 fitted) + other parts. Try Performance Vauxhall spares centre in Essex (01255 670670) idle valve £30 and air mass meter £75 including 3 month warranty on parts. well worth it!!
