1995 Vauxhall Calibra SE 2.0i 16v Ecotech from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Sexy looking coupe!

Faults:

I got the car cheaper than market value as I knew it needed a lot of work.

So far...

Reconditioned Cylinder Head, Head Gasket, 2 x Cam Shafts, Cam belt, alternator belt, cam belt rollers and tensioner, Valve Seals, New Cat, Back box, Air-Con switch, Radiator, Water Pump, Plugs, Leads, Coolant temp sender unit.

But I still love it.

General Comments:

I haven't had the car very long only a few months, but it's running a lot better than when I first got it.

Still a bit of work to do - the engine management warning light is on every now and then. It's going into Vauxhall to be tested on TECH.

The car is really quick. Handling could be better, but hey, the car turns heads.

Chicks love the leather. + heated seats.

1995 Vauxhall Calibra 8v 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An unreliable disappointment.

Faults:

Exhaust parts required at 96,000.

Needed oxygen and temperature sensors recently (expensive).

Air conditioning compressor has failed, £1000 to replace.

Windscreen wiper motor now VERY noisy, £100 to replace.

Drivers side leather seat is showing its age now.

Rust developing on the rear arches and battery tray.

Both lower suspension arms require replacement (

General Comments:

The Calibra handles well, but in 2.0 litre 8 valve form the performance will probably disappoint. The fuel consumption is also rather poor, though this may be due to yet another fault!

It seems that you repair one thing, and something else fails.

I don't think I will be buying another Vauxhall car in the future.

You must have been unlucky, my 8V Calibra is a lovely car to drive. I get about 30mpg which is not too bad. It looks nice and drives well.

I agree, the car is cursed. I fix one thing and another breaks. And I'm pretty sure the car can catch other things from cars. If another car has a problem and I park next to it, I guarantee that the next day my stupid Calibra has the same problem.

1995 Vauxhall Calibra 16V 2.0 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic drive and supermodel looks

Faults:

Waterpump.

General Comments:

This is a fantastic car...

It looks very modern, even though the design is 10+ years old. The interior is well equipped and comfortable. It feels like a solid car, and drives like one too. The performance is good, and the economy isn't bad either.

1995 Vauxhall Calibra 16v 2.0 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Alternator, passenger door, air conditioning, brakes, window, dashboard lights.

General Comments:

Nowhere near as reliable as I expected. A big disappointment. Performance is lame, driving position too high.

I bought this car because I decided to compromise handling for reliability and practicality, a big mistake.

1995 Vauxhall Calibra Coupe 2.0 16v Ecotec petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Misfire: Needed new HT leads and coil, £220.

Petrol Vapour smell in cabin: Needed 7 visits to dealer to fix this, which turned out to be dodgy petrol cap, £250+.

Engine management light on: Needed new crankshaft RPM sensor, £120.

Downpipe Heatshield: Downpipe perfect all but for corroded heatshield, required entire new downpipe as heatshield is integral, £150.

The list really does go on.....

General Comments:

Don't be mistaken, I love the shape of this car and the way it drives. However, it has proved to be a reliability nightmare with no less than 10 visits in less than a year to Vauxhall main agent. The worrying thing is that this car is a 'minter' and driven like a pussycat. I'd hate to own one that's had a hard life.......

Excellent Survey. The Vauxhall Calibra will always be known as a boy racers car. I do feel that having to visit the Main Dealer Ten times in one year is an expensive hobby as the owner of a nine year old vehicle. I do not feel you can blame the manufacturer for this either. It is more likely that the previous owners raced and under serviced this car.

Electric windows do not close (apparently a common fault they cannot fix).

Frequent bulb failures.

Excessive tyre wear.

3 lots of brake pads in 2.5 years.

1995 Vauxhall Calibra 16v 2.0 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Timing Belt @ 25,000 miles: Needed 8 new valves & valve guides: £1300

Front Down Pipe Heat Shield corroded: £120

Camshaft sensor failed @ 28,000 miles: £180

Looks great - but returns to type and behaves like a Cavalier when pushed.

General attitude and helpfulness of dealer staff leaves a lot to be desired.

Reliability problems and dealer service mean that I'm not likely to have another Vauxhall.
