1992 Vauxhall Cavalier GL 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I love it I would buy another

Faults:

Not a lot only had a new wheel arch.

1992 Vauxhall Cavalier LS 1.8i petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nice second hand bargain. But getting hard to find tidy ones

Faults:

Cylinder head blew at 95,000 miles. Clutch cable replaced twice. Car often overheats in traffic jams losing a lot of water. This is due to fan cutting in to late. Radiator replaced at 100,000. Starter motor replaced at 100,000 due to wear. Suspension crashes over bumps?

General Comments:

This car is very reliable. It starts every time, even cold mornings. For the last year or more the car has had no problems what so ever and I hope it will stay that way. The car runs very well for its age. The engine still sounds and runs like new and will happily cruise at 100mph on the motorway, for as long as you like. It will pull well and has often drove the length of the country fully laden with no trouble.

The car does handle like a boat on b roads, but the excellent ride compensates for it.

1992 Vauxhall Cavalier GSi 2000 16V 2.0 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The best touring car of all time

Faults:

Not much has gone wrong this car. I had to change the alternator when I first got the car, but other than that it has just general renewal of normal parts, IE filters etc.

General Comments:

For such a big car this goes really well. It'll certainly keep up if not beat cars of the same spec.

Be warned though, I have lowered mine by -60mm on performance springs and dampers. Although it looks really sweet this model of Cavalier came with independent rear suspension.

So when the car is sat this low the camber on the rear wheels is very bad.

I have to renew new rear tires about every 2 to 3 months.

Other than that I love this car. They are becoming rare now so look out for a good clean one.

1992 Vauxhall Cavalier L 1.6 carb from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great Car

Faults:

Gaiter around gear lever has worn and looks a bit tatty.

Had to buy a side repeater lens from Vauxhall dealer (£1.13 inc vat)

Illumination lamps for heater/ventilation controls have packed up.

Had slight water and air leak from windscreen at top due to small patch or corrosion, cured with touch-up paint and small amount of silicon sealer.

Crows at work pinched wiper blade rubbers (for nesting purposes)

General Comments:

I bought the Cavalier from a colleague as our Acclaim was getting a bit long in the tooth.

It always starts first time and seems quite happy to pull from cold.

Great car on the motorway sneaks up to 90 mph if you are not vigilant.

Oil consumption is non existent and apart from usual consumables has needed very little at all.

40+ mpg on a run and plenty of room for 4 adults and luggage.

Good sound from the radio-cassette.

Loads of space if you fold down the rear seats.

Good heating and ventilation system.

Comfortable seats, what more do you need?

1992 Vauxhall Cavalier L 2.0 i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good value, cheap, and fast!

Faults:

I was losing coolant, which turned out to be caused by a blown head gasket. This was replaced at 85,000 miles.

The passenger compartment floor was extremely wet from water ingress. This turned out to be a faulty seal around a plastic cover at the blower motor under the windscreen wiper mechanism. This was cured by cleaning the plastic cover and smothering the faulty joint in new silicone sealant.

General Comments:

The original AC Delco battery has only been replaced within the last two months. The original was in for ten and a half years, or 106000 miles!

I'm 6' 3", and the headroom is a bit limited for me.

1992 Vauxhall Cavalier GSI 2000 16V 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An all round excellent car

Faults:

Has needed a new roll bar joint (probably due to the speed it has been made to take corners).

2 New front tyres (not cheap)

2 New hoses (due to wear) - 1) - Breather hose 2 - 2) - Side of head to heater matrix hose.

Has undergone a full service.

General Comments:

This car makes a perfect family car as it has four doors and a fair sized boot, and you can comfortably drive long distances.

There is average room inside with many electrics consisting of all electric windows, electric sunroof, electric mirrors. You also get front fog lights, nice sporty adjustable seats and other little extra's like the mirrors under the sun visors light up.

At the same time this car is a fast and well balanced machine, the performance of the car leaves you with the impression that you're driving a V6 and the handling is very firm. When cornering the car glides round at high speed without flinging you to the other side of it.
