2014 Vauxhall Insignia SRi Vx Line Nav 2.0 CDTi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Turbo pipe split (common easy fix).

DPF re gen.

Oil leak.

Problems with wheel alignment (excessive tyre wear) after suspension work - took a 4 wheel alignment to fix.

Headlight condensation.

General Comments:

Bright red Vx Line Insignia with 19 inch alloys - this car still looks the part after all these years.

Amazing good looks aren't its only positive - this car drives very well, is fast when it needs to be and still manages over 50 mpg regularly on diesel.

Interior is also well designed and comfortable, though the SRi stiffer springs may make the ride a bit harsh for some. But it cruises on the motorway perfectly, for which this car was designed.

I love looking at it and driving it, and the value for money this car provides is among the best on the market.

Be aware a lot of diesel Insignia's suffer from engine oil seal failure at this age and mileage - check what engine you have if affected and it's well worth repairing to save the engine. Also note the timing belt is due at this age. A lot of money and work, but worth it to save a looked after car. Walk away from any Insignia with oil lights on or similar problems if buying for yourself. A failure will make the engine seize.

But get a good one and you will love this car. Forget what the badge snobs say about Vauxhall - this car is as good as any German executive car.

2014 Vauxhall Insignia Energy 1.4T petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Smooth drive

Faults:

Turbo failed (£480 for a new one supplied and fitted).

Misfire (mechanic fixed this cheaply).

Water leaks in boot area, headlights also have condensation. Common minor faults I will fix myself when I have time.

Plus the usual wear and tear of age and miles.

General Comments:

The face-lifted 2014 Insignia is a very nice car to drive.

1.4 Turbo is the engine to go for, punchy and still does around 40 miles per gallon if you take it slow.

"Energy" is a basic spec, but the car has plenty of electric kit as standard. Interior is comfortable and refined.

Boot space is huge.

Well worth a look if you find a looked after car at a good price; these are as cheap as it gets in this class on the used market.

Best in dark colors, it is a fantastic looking car!

2014 Vauxhall Insignia SRi 1.8 VVT petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great to drive and look at

Faults:

Oil cooler replaced.

Temp sensor.

Locking issues, due to new key fob, sorted by auto electrician.

Water ingress into spare wheel area.

General Comments:

My Insignia is the first of the updated cars for 2014. It is an extremely good looking car in black with SRi wheels.

Inside the interior is very German like and functional. I love the sporty seats and driving position. Very comfortable and spacious, and super smooth on motorways. Boot space is massive. Electric everything.

To drive the car is very sharp. How well this car drives is what surprised me about it the most. The SRi has stiffer springs which make for fun handling. Ride suffers a bit - rough on some road surfaces but never uncomfortable.

With that sharp handling it's a shame the engine has nowhere near enough poke to have fun. The 1.8 petrol has a healthy 138 bhp, but the problem is it has only 130 ft/lb of torque. And the car weighs around 1500KG. You do the math. To say it is a bit labored sometimes is an understatement! Still, the slick 6 speed manual box allows for quick shifts, drop it into 5th - you'll need to at the start of a hill. With mixed driving it manages around 36 miles per gallon, actually OK for a petrol engine in a heavy car. So the lack of torque aside, this is a fairly economical and reliable engine if looked after. Give it the oil and belt changes it deserves and it is easily more reliable than the more common CDTi diesel engines.

Another good thing about this updated car is the updates to the gearbox - early cars had bearing failure, but it only affected 2008 - 2013 cars. Get a 2014 onwards model and you should avoid gearbox issues.

The fact it is ten years old and now and still feels modern, and looks and drives great says it all, the Insignia is a great car for the money.

Fantastic cars. Watch for the coil packs failing and causing misfiring on the 1.8 petrols. Relatively cheap to fix. This engine is still more reliable than the more common CDTi diesels.
