1996 Vauxhall Vectra 1.6i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good economy car

Faults:

Drivers side window does not go all the way up.

Indicators and full beams come on at the same time.

Uses a lot of oil.

Central locking system not working on back passenger side door.

General Comments:

Not a bad car. I've only had it for a week though, so I'm still getting to grips with it.

There are a couple of faults that I need to sort out when I get a chance, like the indicators and the full beam switch.

One funny thing I have noticed is that a lot of people are complaining about their hand brake on the Vectra model coming off on its own. When I got my Vectra last week, I had a look through all the paper work for it, and found a letter of recall from Vauxhall basically saying there has been a problem found on the hand brake system, and to take the car to the nearest Vauxhall dealer and they will book it in and get it sorted. This must have been done by one of the older owners of the car, as all seems fine at the moment. But if any of you would like a copy of the letter, then please contact me and I will scan and send it to you via email.

1996 Vauxhall Vectra Premier 1.6 16V from UK and Ireland

Summary:

If you can afford something better go for it!

Faults:

Engine wise the car is fantastic!!! 11/10 for reliability. However the body work and electrics have hit me hard financially. I have paid for fixing the central locking twice in one year! The rear wiper needed repairing and rainwater enters the car all too easily. I had to replace the remote control five times (£40 each time). If you want my advice go for something more expensive. You may be sacrificing the hushed environment inside the car, but it'll be worth it in the long term (financially)

General Comments:

A very quiet car - even at high speeds. Interior looks very bland and dated - including the seats. Does take sometime getting use to the biting point as the clutch has to be raised considerably high for the car to move.

Engine gives the impression of it being 'frozen in time'- works like new!The interior looks very cheap with many areas that have "cheap looking solutions"

1996 Vauxhall Vectra GLS 1.7 TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Alternator replaced at 120,000.

Front exhaust pipe at 125,000.

Rear anti-roll bushes at 130,000.

Clutch at 135,000.

Front wishbones at 200,000.

General Comments:

Good strong car, very economical 50 MPG. Probably the slowest of all the Vectra models, but that's why they last longer; the other Vectra engines destroy gearboxes before their time, due to the amount of torque they produce.

1996 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Izuzu engined Vectra diesel

Faults:

The gearbox was knackered - very hard to get into first and second, and sometimes third gear.

If you stood for more than ten seconds, the temperature gauge would rise.

The seats were very awful and a ride to Birmingham was enough.

General Comments:

This car had a 1.7 Izuzu diesel engine. There was nothing wrong with the engine, apart from the temperature gauge rising because the fans would not cut in on time.

Like I said, the gearbox was cream crackered.

We sold the car not because of these problems, but because the car got rammed in the back on the motorway by a Citroen Saxo, which was crushed. All the damage that was done to the Vectra was that the bumper had fallen off, and a crack in the light cluster, that was it. So there is something good about Vauxhalls after all.

1996 Vauxhall Vectra CDX 2.5 V6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Powerful brute with an awesome engine!

Faults:

Leaking water pump. Fixed when I got the cambelt replaced.

The bulb behind the climate control switch has blown.

General Comments:

This car is absolute luxury. Before I bought it I had a Ford Escort Ghia X and the difference between the Ford and this is huge!

The car is spacious and luxurious inside and the heated leather seats are excellent when it's nippy first thing in the morning.

Loads of space in the boot too.

As for the engine, it's quite frankly unbelievable! It will easily potter about town at 30mph and sit at 70 on the main roads whilst returning over 30mpg no problem, but when you wind it up in third gear it'll pull the car all the way from 30 to over 100 in a matter of seconds! Astounding performance!

Considering that you can buy this age and spec of vectra for sweetie money nowadays they have to be well worth thinking about if you are wanting a family car with a bit of poke. The only advice I would offer is make sure that it has got a full service history and has had a cambelt change.

Awesome!!
