2001 Volkswagen Bora 1.8T from North America

Summary:

Very nice

Faults:

The A.C. has a funky smell on the left side of the car.

Premature wear on the brakes.

General Comments:

Good car, needs some refining, expensive when parts break, hates the cold winters of the west. In general it is a car for everyone's needs.

2001 Volkswagen Bora GLX 2.8 VR6 from North America

Summary:

A fun good performing car which is safe

Faults:

Cooling fan sensor which also controlled the air conditioning switch. Not an expensive item.

Transmission stripped out first gear due to "drive by wire" tension slipping - covered under extended warranty. Cost about $2,000. I also replaced the clutch - not under warranty for $425 at about 80,000 miles.

Replaced coil pack again covered by extended warranty. Believe about $400.

Had problems with tire shops stripping out the hub - which I understand is not unusual if they don't take care. Need to be careful with whom you use.

General Comments:

With 125,000 miles the 2001 GLX VR6 with the sport option has performed excellently. It's loaded with everything that VW offered in 01. Since day 1 it's been upgraded with a great deal of high performance equipment, driven hard, raced, but maintained as required.

My 18 year old son checked out the crash protection in a wreck and found out that the air bags work well - and protected him much better than most Japanese cars would. The body shop told me that if he had been in a small Honda or Toyota he might be dead.

VW makes a very safe car.

2001 Volkswagen Bora from Saudi Arabia

Summary:

It's safe on the road, but you cannot depend on after 150,000 Km

Faults:

During the summer time the window holders get broken. I have replaced them all many times on my expense. Every summer I get the same problem because the window holders are made of materials which cannot resist high temperatures, especially in the Arabian Gulf.

Another issue, the car engine has leaked at 100,000 Km, and I fixed it. And again the same problem at 140,000 Km. So, I have to monitor the quantity of oil from time to time to increase it.

2001 Volkswagen Bora V6 4Motion from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Will make you smile every time you drive it

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong in the time that I have had it; it's been perfect.

General Comments:

The car is lovely to drive, turns heads all the time.

It's so quiet at idle, and on the motorway, you can barely hear any engine noise.

It has all the creature comforts you expect; climate control, electric everything, cup holders, the V6 engine is perfect, and in the wet, the 4 wheel drive just grips and grips.

The car is extremely rare; I have not seen another one in the time that I have had the car.

The power delivery is plentiful; trust me, you won't be the one concerned at the lights.

I bought this car by chance; I was only supposed to drive it to the car wash for my friend, and I bought the car off him a week later.

The 6th gear makes sense, especially on the motorways.

A lot of car for little money.

I bought my car on the strength of the factory fitted full Oetinger kit, which has the rear spoiler, side skirts and lower valances front and back, and completely transforms the look of the standard Bora into something very desirable.

2001 Volkswagen Bora 1.9 Tdi 90 bhp from Israel

Summary:

Quality ride and economical

Faults:

None so far.

General Comments:

Car a bit sluggish on acceleration, but cruises well on motorways. Enough acceleration when you need it though. Steering and handling precise and light, a sheer pleasure in town.

Comfortable seating on journeys and solid feel with good ergonomics. Good level of equipment, although my model doesn't have trip computer which is a shame. When using lights in daytime, there is no dashboard symbol to tell you they're on.

Fuel economy is very good, around 17.5 Km/Ltr on motorway and urban.

I had a Skoda Octavia which was stolen. In my opinion the Skoda's got more "presence and grace" with a big car feeling and a better cruiser, but the Bora is lighter, smaller and better equipped.
