1990 Volkswagen Corrado 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A smooth handsome future classic

Faults:

Drive shaft needs replacing.

Seats have started to wear quite badly.

Rear washer jet does not work.

2nd gear synchro has started to wear.

Front disks need replacing.

Some oil leaks.

General Comments:

The corrado is nippy in 3rd and 4th gear, but rather sluggish in 1st and 2nd gears. Best to find some bendy roads if you want to start taking racing other cars.

The interior is very spacious considering it is a coupe.

Great looking car, seemingly a future classic.

I love my '90 G60 and I like hearing such great comments, but I have to question this one. Since when does a front wheel drive car have a drive shaft? Anyway, keep motoring and use Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic, Yo.

Front wheel drive cars have two drive shafts. It's what the noisy spinney big lumps of metal uses in the form of 'shafts' to 'drive' the front wheels.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Rarer Corrado brings a smile to your face

Faults:

Top hose leak - replaced myself for £10.00.

Front brakes - both flexibles bulging - replaced by an independent garage for £80.00.

Previous owner replaced the rear calipers.

Bangs a bit at the back when 4 up.

General Comments:

This car is delight to drive - corners as if on rails and is serious fun.

Looks great and is sure to be an up and coming classic.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60 1.8 supercharged from North America

Summary:

A great car with lots of potential

Faults:

My motor mount broke.

My fog lights were cracked when I got the car - common problem.

Engine coolant temp sensor was replaced.

Some ground wiring was bad and was replaced.

Air/Fuel mixture problem.

General Comments:

The car is very comfortable.

Although it lacks low end power, a supercharger pulley, performance computer, and intake really do help.

It handles like no other car, it is, in my opinion the best handling car.

Currently my car is getting too much gas and not enough air, making it run rich, and finding someone to figure out what is wrong with it has been horrible.

The problem with the fuel mixture may be that you have a bad oxygen sensor. The one on my '89 Golf went out and it had the same problem. One way to test this is to unplug the sensor and then the car should run better.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60 1.8 supercharged from North America

Summary:

A high maintenance beauty

Faults:

Sunroof would no longer retract itself.

Speed sensitive spoiler would no longer work.

Supercharger required a rebuild.

Water drain would get obstructed with debris (leaves, dirt...) and the passenger side would get flooded.

The headlights and fog lights cracked.

The rod bearings needed to be replaced.

The wipers never worked properly.

Heater core recall had to be performed.

General Comments:

The car is very quick and handles extremely well.

The 1.8 engine is surprisingly strong and mileage is unaffected by minor modifications like the air intake or the computer chip.

The car is a pleasure to drive and turns quite a few heads.

Unfortunately, maintenance is very expensive.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado 16V 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Stylish now, and a future classic

Faults:

Front wheel bearings at 50,000 miles.

Door handles (thin metal part breaks) at 80,000 and 117,000.

Read calipers at 50 & 60,000 miles.

Cambelt tensioner at 100,000 miles.

Water hoses at 60,000 miles.

Cambelt lasts 50,000 miles (I changed mine at 94,000 miles after it snapped. Normally does lots of damage to the pistons).

Clutch lasts a long time (still on the original at 120,000 miles).

General Comments:

Interior wears extremley well.

Aftermarket (non-VW) exhausts don't last well, especially back boxes (only about 18 months before failure).

1990 Volkswagen Corrado 16v 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A nice looking, reliable car

Faults:

Nothing major, given the age of the car and the mileage.

Both engine mountings replaced.

Rear brake caliper sticking.

CV joints and boots replaced.

Major problems with a badly aligned exhaust (constant boom at 3500 rpm), but not the fault of the car. Sorted now, but took ages to fix.

Headlight switch replaced.

Will need new brake discs quite soon (again, OK given the mileage and age)

Rear screen washer not working.

New off-side headlamp (internal corrosion). Had to buy new from VW (130 pounds!!!)

Cracked fog-lights (common problem).

Driver's seat bolster, starting to show its age, seat also tearing.

Headlights not particularly powerful, but not sure what the problem is as both have been replaced quite recently.

General Comments:

Given the mileage and age of the Corrado, reliability has been first rate. It is fun to drive, reasonably quick, but let down by (to my mind) an excessively harsh ride, especially in town. High speed stability is excellent, as is handling and road-holding.

Apart from a few minor niggles the car has performed faultlessly. It is one of the few cars that I have owned that actually brings a smile to my face, whenever you floor the throttle. I previously, owned a Golf GTi 8V, and sometimes miss the flexibility of this engine, since the 16V is rather peaky, but its willingness to rev is a definite plus.

The car looks good too... I find myself, looking back at it all the time!!!
