1990 Volkswagen Corrado 16V 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high performance future classic

Faults:

There are a couple of faults which are common to Corrado's: Rear brakes becoming seized and the door handle can break. These have both happened to me.

Another problem the car faces, is at high speeds the windscreen does not get properly cleaned by the wipers.

General Comments:

I have had the car for a few years now and everytime I get in, it brings a smile to my face. The car has brilliant performance, and amazing handling. As there are not that many around, it is becoming quite rare and so it turns quite a few heads. Some people complain about the hard ride, but I think that it adds to the character of the car.

It is expensive to run as parts are not cheap and the insurance is quite high as well. If you are looking for a fast unique car, you should look at the Corrado. I am currently looking for my next Corrado, this time a VR6, so you can see I put my money where my mouth is.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado 16V 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

If I hadn't hit a fallen tree I'd still own my lovely Tornado Red Corrado :-(

Faults:

Drivers side rear brake caliper siezed - a common problem with Corrados and Mk2 Golf GTIs I was informed.

Worn front wheel bearing.

Aftermarket immobilizer caused starting difficulties with hot starting on warm days - I did not include this in my reliability score above as it can hardly be blamed on VW.

General Comments:

I absolutely adored this car. Very practical, can seat four adults in reasonable comfort and has a sizeable boot. The handling is a dream (once went through a roundabout at 70) and is superb fun to drive. Acceleration while not the cars strong point was okay but the best way to make that Nova SRi a dot in the rear-view mirror was to find a twisty road and nail the throttle - Corrados don't seem to need to slow down for bends the same way most cars do ;-)

1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60 1.8 supercharged petrol from Mexico

Faults:

Well, it is a sports car, it is for two persons only, the G-charger fails at +/- 50k miles, the sunroof fails too.

General Comments:

But the good things are more than the bad things of this car, it is a very fast and good handling car, it fits everywhere. I take the curves at 55 mph and the four wheels stay on the ground.

Try it, but be very careful.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado 16V 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Cracked headlight lens left by previous owner - result: instead of 30 quid for a new lens, 180 for a new headlamp assembly to replace a corroded reflector.

HT leads replaced at 90,000.

Timing belt and tensioner replaced at 81,000 as added insurance, old ones were O.K.-ish.

Synthetic gearbox oil added at 95,000 to aid shifting on a wearing 2nd gear, better, but 2nd's synchro is wearing.

Front and rear brake disks replaced at 95,000 (probably original set).

Parcel shelf strap broke!

General Comments:

The handling of this car is great, real fun on twisting roads. It's a bit heavy for the 1800 16V engine though, and the car lacks low down torque in comparison with the pull from 4-7000 rpm. As a result it's a bit miserable to drive in town - 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd etc... if you don't get above 40.

I love the cars looks though, especially in black (when clean) and the VW quality is definitely there, the interior looks and feels better than my sister's 2 year old 20,000 mile Peugeot 306, even at 101,000. I will probably hang on to this car for a very long time.
